Hello all....I recently purchased an 86 GT...front end really "bangs" and whips the wheel with rough road...new shocks already done...the car has 215's all the way around (door states front should be 205's) but I can't believe that would make such a big difference. I have had a fiero in the past (but was brand new back in 85) but I don't remember it taking the bumps so badly. Could the steering damper be to blame? On the gamble that I am correct in blaming the damper I ordered one and it should be here next week. Also, it was recently tuned up but at idle in neutral it revs at about 1300 to 1500...kind of slams in to gear (automatic) and then idle is held down at about 800 with foot on brake....I was going to just adjust the idle but I am afraid that if I turn it down and then put it in gear it would be too low so I am wondering if there is a sensor or anything I should be hunting for. And finally...if I let the car sit and idle for a while the check engine light comes on....as soon as I rev. it up a bit it goes out and stays out until I let it idle for a while again (about 4 or 5 minutes). Took it in for inspection (NY state hooks to computer and if any codes pop up they fail it) and it passed so I am guessing that means there were no codes popping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Paul

Get the front end looked at, it could be bad tie rods, a bad rack
bushing, wheel bearings, ball joints, etc.

The high idle you're experiencing is typical of a major vacuum leak
and the most common source of a vacuum leak that big is a cracked
EGR tube, usually cracked where it connects to the underside of the
intake manifold. With the engine idling spray carb cleaner on the
tube at both ends, if the idle changes there's your leak. The idle
is not adjustable, the screw that you're thinking is the idle is really
just a throttle stop. If you tamper with the idle you'll create many
new problems with drivability and idle quality. The ECM controls the
idle using the IAC, or Idle Air Control.

Remove the trim plate that the cigarette lighter is in, and
behind it you'll see a connector. Use a paper clip unbent into
a "U" shape to connect the DIAGNOSTIC and GROUND terminal in
the connector, then turn the key to RUN (but don't start!).
The light will start to blink, starting with BLINK, BLINK-BLINK
repeated three times. This is code 12, then each additional stored
code will blink three times. Write down the codes, and when code 12
starts repeating again you're done. Turn the key to OFF and remove
the paper clip. Report back what codes you get.
Here's a picture of the connector, BTW, it's called the ALDL for
Assembly Line Diagnostic Link.

Jazzman,
Thanks for all the info. I had the front end looked over at local shop and
they said only one tie-rod showed a very minimal amount of play...and that
it wasn't enough to cause all the movement. Their guess was the steering
damper as well. I will look for vacuum leak in the morning and also run the
codes and report back to you then.
Thanks again,
Paul

Jazzman,
The car ended up being put on the bottom of the "to do list" this
week....sent it out to the seats re-done instead. Will hopefully get a
chance to play with the codes next week and get back to you then.
Thanks again for all the info.
