I am a newbie so please be gentle with me. I need to lay down some history
on the car first, I have an auto 86gt with the 2.8 that came with the car.
I had the engine rebuilt by a machine shop near me in nj and the block had
to be bored and oversized pistons put in, since i had left the job of
tearing it down to weather and rust formed. i decided to put on heads from
the fiero store, a mild cam that they were selling, roller rockers, new
rods. decided to do it up a bit. i was having trouble starting the car at
first. turned out the fuel injectors were trashed. rebuilt injectors were
put in. started fine, still wasnt running great. took it to a fiero
enthusiast who works on them, a week later and $400, a new egr solenoid.
pick it up and 20 minutes later starts running crappy and sets an egr
code. after searching the web for answers, i checked vacuum to the egr and
that was the culprit. ran fine for a few months. then she backfired and
died one day. changed distributor coil and ignition module (both delco)
started up and ran rough. replaced wires (they crumbled from heat
exposure), plugs, cap, rotor, put heat shield on the plug ends. checked
timing. timing is ok, but unstable. checked resistance on the pickup coil
and it was within spec according to haynes manual. still runnning like its
missing at idle. at speed it seems better. takes a long time to get back to
1000rpm when you stop at a light also. like a minute almost. I was thinking
it might be a distributor or fuel injector problem. but they were both
replaced already. distributor is from the fiero store btw. another thing i
can't understand is, while trying to let it idle and find the problem after
awhile, the next time i go to rev it up it spits out a small amount of
blackish smoke! im at wits end ...anyone?

thanks

The idle problem could be a sticking IAC valve, or a vacuum leak - likely
the EGR tube if the EGR valve has been messed with. Spray some carb cleaner
on the ends of the EGR tube and see if your idle changes.

Did you check timing with the ALDL jumpered? Check for play in the
distributor - the Fiero Store sells them reconditioned, IIRC. Could be you
got one with loose bushings.

You also didn't mention the O2 sensor. A bad one could cause it to run rich
or lean.

How are your engine temps? Do you have a low temperature thermostat
installed? (or none?) "Performance" chip?

To know for sure what's going on, I would get the ALDL software from the
Fiero Store or elsewhere and monitor the temp, O2, timing advance, etc.

I replaced the o2 sensor when i put the engine in. I also thought the egr
might be the problem, so i took the tube off and checked it for leaks, i
also put gm oem gaskets when i replaced the tube. i will check if it has
loosened though, that could be a possibility since it is so hard to get to
that one 10mm bolt by the throttle body. i also was thinking the
distributor from the fiero store might be the culprit, but it ran
beautifully before the coil & module went south. i have been looking for
vacuum leaks, and so far no luck. any other suggestions? thanks for the
help so far. It's given me some ideas on which way to go.

Have you quadruple-checked that the plug wires are on the proper plugs? I
chased this one for the longest time - the engine would run OK under
throttle, but it would idle poorly. 5 and 6 were switched.

Are you sure the ECM is going into closed-loop operation? Some of your
symptoms sound like an engine that constantly thinks it's cold. (running
rich, high idle)

You might also check the output of the TPS. The ECM will go nuts with
incorrect throttle position readings. That ought to throw a code, though,
unless it's intermittent.

i checked my wires and they were correct, also bought a rebuilt distributor
from auto zone and returned it after finding that wasn't the problem. im
going to try buying a compression gauge and see what the status of the
cylinders are. after that i will take apart the upper mainfold and look
for leaks and check the injectors. im running out of options. the crazy
thing is ...no codes!!! frustrated.

any suggestions anyone?

thanks in advance

My 88 Formula for the 1st 3 minutes of a cold start surges wildly from
500rpm to 1500 rpm & back. After 3+ minutes real smooth. Still can't solve
that problem even though changed all sensors, etc.

86,
If the engine has been out of the car there is a good chance that the
ground straps never got reconnected. If you do a search on Pennock's for
ground strap issues you'll find a host of ailments that are associated.
Hope this helped.
