Will a Fiero V6 engine from a 4 speed bolt up to an automatic transmission?
I have an opportunity to buy a pair of 1986 Fiero's.  One is a GT with a V6
and an automatic and one is a SE with a V6 and a 4 speed.  The engine in the
GT is totally shot and I would like to take the engine out of the SE and
install in the GT.  Seems like an easy swap.....is there anything that will
make this harder than it seems?

I had a GT with a bad motor too. What I did was take the V6 out of the
GT and totally rebuilt it. I was real close to putting it back in the
car when I got sick and ended up moving. Before I left, I had the car
towed away but the motor is still on the engine stand in the garage in
Los Angeles. Let me know if you'd like a good deal on it. I don't think
I could get it crated up and shipped though. You'd have to pick it up.

Block was rebuilt by reputable company that advertises racing parts in
the magazines and builds high performance engines; pistons are new &
fitted by same company, half the rods are new, the others were resized,
new cam & lifters, oil pump, water pump, all the bearings of course,
heads rebuilt by same company, plenum and valve covers are powder
coated black crinkle with shiney cap screws (looks pretty good) and the
shiney bare metal ridges cleaned up real well and look good. Oil
pressure bypass valve is new... oh yeah, new crank. All the bolt-on
parts like brackets, oil pan, and headers were tanked and painted. I
have pictures of all the parts prior to assembly.

As Jazzman said, no problems swapping the motor, just remember you have to
swap the ECM and wiring harness and (IIRC) the throttle cables are
different.  Since you have both cars. you'll have everything you need, just
don't expect it to be an afternoon job.  Have fun.

Throttle cables will be the same.  They're different between the duke's &
the 6's is what you're thinking....

Yep, I misread, thought he was going from a Duke to a V6, thanks for
catching it.  Wiring harness is still different due to the lockup, IIRC.

Fer sure - std to auto will be different.
Even A/C to non-A/C is different (so there's 4 harness's!).
85's are slightly different than the later years as well - so now that's 6
of 'em!

Let's not even try to add in all the variants of the dukes....

Just to make it clear to the OP: The engine is a direct swap,
but you'll need to keep the original harness with the car. In
other words, swap out the block/head/intake/exhaust assembly
as a unit. Pick the better of the alternators, hoses, piping,
etc. The harness stay with the original car. The axles are
different, the rest of the suspension is the same. Recommend
that you port out the exhaust manifolds on the donor motor,
taking this opportunity to install either new bolts or Rodney's
exhaust stud kit http://www.rodneydickman.com. One or more
of the forward exhaust bolts is guaranteed to break, repairing
them off the car is so easy. Oh, on the porting, when you look
inside the ports it's obvious what needs to be done.
