Hi guys, Anybody know how much fluid the 88 5 speed Muncie holds? The
Chilton's book claims 2 quarts but I am barely on the stick with that and
need to go buy more! how much? Wonder what else is wrong in that book.

Thanks

IIRC it's something like just under 4 quarts of Synchromesh.
You can get it at AutoZone IIRC under the Valvoline or
Pennzoil brand, don't use anything else.

Thanks, I could not come up with Synchromesh here. Have you heard anything
about Royal Purple Synchromax synthetic? I am two quarts into it now,  all
the stores that carry it are closed! I even sunk so low I went to Shucks
looking for the stuff!
Most of the info I have gotten said to use 5W30 motor oil Which I am pretty
sure was what I drained out but doing a search online I discovered that the
synthetic was what was needed for the 88 tranny. I hope I don't need to
drain it out again!

Here is a link to there site if you are at all interested
http://royalpurple.com/

Thanks again.

When the 'books' were all written way back then - Synchromesh didn't exist!

All the bulletins since then have said to use it.

If it's not Synchromesh it's not Synchromesh. GM carries
it but its ten bucks a quart there. The motor oil was the
old specification for the four speeds, the Getrag five
speeds always used Synchromesh. GM later updated the
spec for the four speeds to Synchromesh as well. Check with
AutoZone, if they don't stock it they should be able to order
it.

Well dang! Syncromax is 9 bucks a quart, it took something under 3 to fill
it up.  The company claims it can replace Synchromesh in my tranny. I am not
being argumentative nor claiming any knowledge about this and hope no one
reads anything like that into my posts.
I suppose lots of companies make all kinds of claims about there products
some true some not. 30 bucks is not enough to get worked up about so I will
try and get the Synchromesh and change it out again. You sound adamant about
it, I don't know, and I joined this list to get opinions from knowledgeable
Fiero folks so I would be a fool  not take your advice! but I will ask the
guys at the dealer what they think when I go in to get it.

Is there a decent manual for these cars? That Chilton's is going in the
trash!

Thanks

Sorry, I came off hostile and didn't mean it.  :)

If the company claims it's compatible with Syncromesh then
it will probably do fine. The main problems with non-compatible
fluids are cold weather shifting and wear on the blocker
rings. The, I think it's Valvoline, Synchromesh is the same
as the GM stuff and it's sold at the AutoZones around here for
half the GM price, about $5/quart.

Having never seen the stuff all I can say is, if the Royal Purple is
thick, like gear oil, it won't work.  The synchromesh stuff is a very
lite oil, for a trany fluid.  It is about the same viscosity cold as
5-w30 engine oil is when it is hot.

The factory (Helms) manual is the only decent Fiero manual I've ever
seen.  The Chilton and Haynes ones are useless.  I do have a Haynes S-10
book and it is more useful working on the Fiero then the Fiero ones.
(Its aslo more than twice as thick.)

The stuff is very thin.
Helms, I have been hearing of that, rather expensive but you get what you
pay for most of the time!

Helms Publishing is the publishing house under contract with
GM to print their service manuals. GM is not in the printing
business so they sub that out to Helms. Helms also prints
manuals for most of the other major car makers too.

BTW - it's "Helm" not "Helms"  :)

And since nobodies mentioned it (or I missed it!)

Pennzoil is the maker of the Syncromesh Fluid.  I believe they also
make it for GM, but it's sold under the Pennzoil brand name at Auto
Zone and Advance Auto.  Takes about 2.7 quarts to fill the Getrag.  I
paid $6 or $7 a quart.

Chilton's used to be the repair Bible, but has declined in quality.
Haynes makes a pretty good book for the home mechanic.  Just make sure
you get the thickest one on the shelf.  I know of at least 3 versions
by Haynes, with the thinnest one being less than what you'd find in the
factory owners manual.

Since we changed to manuals on this one, I like the Helm manual as well but
I also found on E-bay, someone selling the helm manual diagrams on CD. I use
that to print the page that I need when working on the car so I can get it
dirty and keep my helm manual clean. It was sold by Blueskiesandtailwinds
(user name) if you are interested. I think I got it for around $25.00. It
seems to be the same as the helm manual for pictures but no info like
disassembly or specs. BTW I put the dealer fluid (per my mechanic) in mine
at about $10.00 per qt with no problems here. The shifting still gets sticky
in the cold though (below zero), so it's a warm weather driver only for me.
