look around on the front side of the shifter handle, find a little slot
with a hairpin-like clip in it and remove this with a scribe or small
screwdriver, just pry it out. The handle will now pull off and you can
remove the cover

Hi Bob-
I still must be doing something wrong. Towards the top of the shifter
handler (the side facing away from me) was a small cutaway section. I
found what you referred to as a hairpin-like clip - only what I pulled
out fairly easy was more of a
5/8" long brad. I thought, boy, that was easy.... but the handle still
won't budge. I must be doing something wrong as it shouldn't be that
difficult.
Any ideas?
THanks.. Rick

It should look like a about 5/8in long staple. If what came out looked
like a brad - one leg - it is probably broken and the rest is still in
place. The two legs, not the crossbar, are what hold the knob in place.
