My son's (a senior in high school) 1986 GT is idling very fast.  For quite
some time it has idled at about 1500 RPM, but last week it started idling at
about 3500 RPM.  Any suggestions on what might be causing the trouble?

First thing is to check for vaccum leaks - one common place is the EGR
tube, it has a tendency to crack.

More specifically, it normally cracks at the last corrugation
before the flange end under the intake manifold. With an idle
that fast it usually means that it's completely broken all the
way through. Pull the fabric blanket back from the manifold end
and inspect, you'll probably have to remove the distributor
cap to get better access.

JazzMan,

We looked around for vacuum leaks before and did not see anything obvious.
My son could live with a slightly high idle speed, but 3,500 RPM is no good.
It is really cold here now, but hopefully it is going to warm up enough this
week so that we can work on it.  I appreciate your advice.

You didn't mention if the engine is a 4 or 6.   No one mentioned that
if it's a 4, the idle speed solenoid in the throttle body may be the
culprit.   Or did I miss something ?

He said that it was an 86 GT, and all GTs are v-6.  I also agree the
most likly culprit is the egr tube. Problably completely broken off
under the trotle body.
