Hi,

I need to remove the "front" exhaust manifold on my 1988 GT Fiero. Need
to fix a crack in it.  Can anyone give me directions on how to proceed.
My hands are not small and the space there... man it is not much. I
would appreciate detailed information.

Anyone done this before?

Best

Done it...  many many times...  on many many cars!!
Is there a "trick"?  An "easy way out"?
No.

:)

Liberal use of "moovit", or your favorite penatrant is in order.  If you
have A/C - remove (well at least pull them away from the engine) the pump
and bracket or you will never get access to the two end bolts.

Do the crossover bolts first.

IF you break a bolt off in the head (about a 50/50 chance you'll break ONE
anyhow), you have the choice to have it towed to a shop and have them try to
get an angle drill in to remove it (suggest the use of a left hand drill
bit!)....  or you or someone else gets to pull the heads and have the bolts
extracted.  If you pull one - pull BOTH.  You want pressures equal, and you
can't guarantee your new head gasket is the same thickness as the other one.

PB Blaster on the bolts.
Wait overnight.
Remove the dogbone.
PB Blaster again.
Loosen the forward transmission mount.
Remove the decklid.
Attach a ratcheting cargo strap from the decklid latch hook to the engine
lifting eye near the dipstick.
Crank on the ratchet to tighten the strap and you can get another 4-6 inches
between the engine and firewall.
PB Blaster again.
Crawl under. (It's easier from below)
Remove the AC bracket.
Wear gloves because the heat shield on the manifold WILL cut your hand to
ribbons.
Have an assortment of open end, box end, and crow's foot wrenches handy.
The bolts to the y-pipe will likely not survive.
Sacrifice a goat to prevent bolts breaking off in the head.
Use anti-seize and new bolts when replacing.
Enjoy.
