87 Fiero GT - Overheating

Nightcheck - 04 Jun 2006 21:23 GMT Hi - I have a beautiful 1987 Fiero GT (original owner) which (knock on wood) has rarely given me problems - but I a stumped now (probably because I know next to nothing about auto repairs).
The problem is overheating as follows:
1) I fill the place (where the thermostat is housed - on the rear engine) with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. This is done until it begins to flush out from the radiator (I had already taken the front radiator cap off).
2) I fill the Coolant overflow tank with coolant.
3) After about 5 minutes of driving with no problems - the heating gaige "redlines" - I pull over and it is hissing like it's read to explode. Please note: Nothing appears to be leaking because I always check - I know the original water and coolant is still in there - albeit probably turned to steam.
4) Since nothing was leaking - I assumed it was a bad thermostat so I purchased another one - yet the same problem.
5) I replaced the water pump in 2004 (8,000 miles ago - I drive the car very little) and replaced the radiator in 2001 (19,000 miles ago) - so I would assume it shouldn't be one of those (I hope)
Can anyone give me some guidance on what the problem might be. ?
Thanks so much in advance.
Rick
Keith - 04 Jun 2006 21:51 GMT Dude, I had the same problem on both an 84 and an 88. The problem was a blown head gasket in either case. Seems like they are prone to blowing into the water jacket. Have the compression checked to confirm it, I could be wrong.

You've replaced the front rad cap too right? There's really only good for a few years. I've replaced what HAD to be 20 year old stockers on customers cars and they wondered why it leaked... sigh....
Anyhow, that aside.... You're on the right track with the filling, but - having the car pointed downhill helps. Make sure it's a good stream coming out (not just bubbles or whatever), and have someone else slap on the front cap WHILE you're filling. This leaves the least amount of air up there.
Put the rear cap on withOUT the thermostat in there. Fire up the car and let it run about 30 seconds. Pull the cap, and make sure there's no foam, or dropped level. If there is, top it up, then repeat until there's no change. Now put in the T-stat, slap on the cap and you should be golden.

The plastic parts are bogus and will only last about as long as yours did.

The guys on here and elsewhere swear by a fairly detailed "burping" process for the radiator system to get all the air out ... basically doing what you did , but in several cycles to make sure the air is purged.
Good Luck,
Jeff

You'll never clog your in-basket. Messages sit on the ISP's server and they trash them when they want, usually long after everyone has read them. We used to have some really good people here but some have left because everyone says to go to Pennock's, etc. Good advice, but if there is no traffic here, the ISPs will start to drop us and those of us who don't have time enough to keep up with Fiero Yahoo and/or Pennocks will be cast off without a towline.
Since you are in the neighborhood, Boomeric, perhaps you can show Ed Parks how to work newsgroups. I tried, but I'm a Mac guy and he's not. Then we'll get more people posting, the ISPs will be happy, people will get turned on again, and this gateway into the Fiero Lifestyle with go on.
ALT.AUTOS.FIERO: The place to go when you just want a hug, not a marriage.. :-)

Ed knows Fieros, not PCs. His next class with me is on attaching files to email messages. :) Newsgroups? No, too far advanced for him. Could you imagine me showing him how to work something like Forte Agent?? YIKES! LOL
Now when are you bringing me that '88 coupe? ;)

Hard to deal with in the sunny south. It wants to be here in New England or in Canada. Ed says if it goes down there, it becomes a parts car and if I wanted that, I'd do it myself. :-)

Haul it out here if you're going to haul it anywhere! ;)

Can't get much farther away and still be in North America. But if you're willing to pay the freight, I'm up for a long ride west in the Fall. The question is, at what point along the border will they let me enter Canada?
And even more important, do I bring my passport and longjohns? :-)

The question > is, at what point along the border will they let me enter Canada? > > And even more important, do I bring my passport and longjohns? :-) Yup, I'm in BC. So ya know... if you just HAPPEN to be here ANYHOW, you can leave it with me. ;)
Passports not a bad idea, but it's not required YET. So far, we just need a drivers license and birth certificate to head south. There's talk of stiffening up the rules to go down (they add a bit each year), but that's where we're at right now.
As for longjohns.... that'll depend on the time of year... right now you'd drop dead from heat stroke! :)

These "southern" folks are pampered by A/C. ;)
LOL

All the parts are already sitting in my barn.

Lucky boy. He's got a barn. If I had a barn, I'd keep the car. :-)
