OEM Subwoofer - Will it or not?

Has anyone ever installed an OEM subwoofer system in a 1984 model? The
installation instructions I find at a half dozen different web sites clearly
states "any year, any option package", But after getting a complete setup, I
can see no way in hell the speaker enclosure can fit my '84 using the
attached bracketry. So I googled this group and found a post from 2000 that
says anything but an '84. WTF!

I can find no other references aside from the above sources & a crappy
little drawing in my Haynes manual (so much for having all my questions
answered by my freshly purchased '84 GM Factory Manual). Until I can look at
a newer model I don't know exactly how they might differ, but I'm guessing
the chime/flasher unit has a different mount, at the least. Does anyone know
if it's possible to use a newer style right end piece for the heater box, or
was there more redesigned than just how the chime/flasher unit mounts?

TIA, -Stumpson

I have owned both 84 and now am 88GT and I didn't think there was any
difference in the passenger side compartment. I have the Factory manual for
the 88 but Im not sure what information you need on the heater box. It looks
to me that the part of the heater box that the subwoofer mounts to applies
to 86-88 not 84-85 but I can't find any information in the book or the CD
that says what the difference is exactly. It shows the subwoofer on 86-88
picture not the 84-85 picture so I would think that you could swap the two.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance and I would be happy to help.
You might also check the local salvage yard for one you could compare.

Thanks for the reply Brian. I've since found out all I need is the heater
core access panel (for mounting one side of the speaker housing), the chime
unit bracket (different mounting position) and the right side carpet
stiffener (to hold the amplifier) from and '86 or newer model.

My thanks go out to Mike in Colorado for the exact answers I needed & to
Oliver Scholz for his excellent Fiero Subwoofer FAQ webpage (complete with
amplifier schematics. I don't know how I missed this site on my previous
search, but I did!).

Now I just need to get the new parts. And figure out why the amp's not
working....
