I just finished my clutch replcement job this weekend and hooked up
the shift cables it shifts pretty good but was wondering if they would
work better if in 1 gear vs another gear ??

85 GT 4 speed 65K miles

Thanks
Hank

P.S. clutch job would not want to do again I supported the engine from
the top using two by fours and a chain and droped the cradle.

Huh?  I cannot figure out what you are asking.

If you are talking about adjusting the cables and in which gear you have it
in when you set the cables up.  My approach is that you put the shifter in
neutral then set the trans in neutral.  Then stand at the drivers side back
of the car reach down with your hand to the cables so you can watch the
shifter inside the car move through the back window.  Then I move the
shifter using the cables to get it into the 3/4 gate area and set the trans
arms in roughly the same spot and tighten it down.  Then take it for a boot
around the block.  Check how it feels and if need be pull back in and adjust
my left to right movement a little more.  This seems to work the best for
me.   I have set up several 4spd cars this way and a few 5spd cars this way.
