85 GT 68K miles a few months back it started making a ticking noise
coming from the engine during acceleration but quiets down at level
speed. During idle or revving the engine the noise is not there its
only heard during load condition.

Is this lifter noise and is it a potential problem?
If its a lifter how do you determine which cylinder It coming from?

I got the car last summer I have a 85 SE as well that I have been
driving for years.

probably a cracked exhaust manifold, usually the front one

There is an engine stethescope that  you can buy to narrow down the location
of the noise. Most auto parts stores have it, otherwise check your local
Sears/K-Mart store

Does it also seem to have a slight hesitation. My guess is that it is a
bad plug wire or plug. Mine recently had a similar thing. I thought it
was a lifter. One of the plug wires was corroded inside and under load
the engine wasn't getting enough juice to fire the plug enough and caused
a slight ticking sound load.

No hesitation and wires and plugs are fine like I said it only makes
the noise when accelerating it sounds fine during idle or just revving
it or maintaining constant speed.
