Hank,
The stalk is the cluster of controls that protrudes from the left side
of the steering column. The only electrical circuits in the stalk are
related to the two cruise control switches. The wiper circuits are inside
the steering column. It is unusual to have this problem with one car let
alone two. The stalk must be taking a beating in those two cars. Anyhow, you
may need to pull the steering wheels to get at the circuits. It is also
possible that the screws that anchor the circuit assembly to the column have
come loose. That can result in intermittent functions.

Yes maybe something became loose I will take apart the SE as I hardly
ever drive it now to see if that is the case.
