nissan patrol - which model?

Hi

I'm looking to get a new Nissan Patrol, want to get the 3.0 Litre
turbodiesel mainly for its relative economy. Should I get the manual or the
auto. The specs say the engine on the manual produces 380 Nm torque at the
flywheel, but the one on the automatic does only 354 Nm. I tried the manual,
but the stick keeps vibrating in the cabin, and I know this is going to get
on my nerves on long  drives.

Also is it possible to sleep in the rear? I'm only 173 cm tall. Read
somwhere that the floor might not be flat with the seats up.

Thanks.

if  you want economy you just answered your own question

Not that easy - the nrma review of the 2005 Nissan Patrol 3.0 TD states 10.8
lphkms for the manual and 10.7 for the auto. Looks like whatever they did to
up the torque on the manual engine increased the fuel consumption. I think
they widened the power band on the manual engine, because the engine kept
dropping below boost in the previous year's models.

My four wheel driving is going to be limited to fire trails, basically need
a big camping car to take on holidays. If I tow anything ever, it will be
one of those pop top caravans that will be lighter than a full sized
caravan.

well if you believe those figures then good luck

If you take economy out of the equation, what would you recommend? Basically
I want to know if the increase in NVH is worth the extra 26 Nm, given that I
am not contemplating any offroad work  or heavy towing that may require the
extra torque.

I'd also like to know if the cargo space after folding up the last two rows
of seats, is flat or bumpy.

Apparently, the 3.0L TD is not too bad with the Dtronic chip installed.

And the hole in the pistons problem was fixed post 2001. Caused by dud
cylinder castings, that didn't supply oil to no 3 & 4 pistons.

The factory holes in the pistons also help.

There are still post 2001 models failing today.

no, actually it was a problem during assembly, when the cranks are
installed, the Jig used was not correct, and the cranks bent the oil
feeders when being fitted up.

Maybe as far as new buzz box motors go compared to a Hilux or Triton motor.

Come back and tell us that when you've added 100,000km with no problems
after installing an intercooled turbo running 18psi boost to a 250,000km
motor like a mates 4.2. Or at least towed a caravan round Australia 3 times
like a mates normally aspirated diesel with 500,000km on it.

There's good reasons why truck motors haven't hallved in size :-)

Its on a 3 year lease, so I'll be lucky to do 50,000kms by the end of lease.

I don't tow anything heavier than a box trailer, which i can easlily tow
with my other car. Heck, I didn't even order a towbar.

I wouldn't be allowed to put an aftermarket turbo on it.

Soaring fuel costs are a concern.

Getting the td42 would have pushed me into the LCT bracket.

Given the above, i feel the td30 was the better choice.
