<Barnseys blogg time>
Um, er.....I'll translate that into English. Yep, had a big night last
night. My father in law used to be a cop in the 70s and 80s and his Qld
police mates' son got married yesterday. It was a TOP wedding, and there
were lots of cops and ex cops there. I listened to some very interesting
yarns....I don't know why I have the compulsion to get on the net when I'm
pissed. Never mind.
Anyway, about 4WDs............I bought my 97 GQ TD a few months ago, and it
doesn't get driven much. We only use it for 4wd ing and camping trips,
infact, we've done only 1500Ks since May. We have a feral 89 Camry we've
nick named "Tojo's Revenge" that does all the running around town. So I
haven't had much to write about 4wds. The Patrol is still immaculate, and
still very low milage. I intend to keep it that way, and own it for many
many years.
We've done quite a few camping trips within and hour or so of Townsville
with the kids. I'm trying to get another job that doesn't involve shift
work, so we can use our hard earned 4WD and camping trailer more often.
I work for Qld Health. Please help!
Actually, I was going to post up a big whinge about our last camping trip.
Tony Smith will know where I'm talking about. Kielbottom Creek. Saturday
night, clear night, watching shooting stars, total silence apart from the
crackle of the Barnsey special campfire..........then we get buzzed by 2
black hawk choppers for 2 hours!
It's near army land, so I suppose you cant complain too much, but I got the
impression that the choppers were using our camp fire as a navigation point.
They were flying at about 50 feet over the creek, and I'm sure they could
see us.
So every time they passed over us, we gave them something to look at. The
best was when my 5 kids did a line up of moons. I can only imagine what 5
bare arses would look like through night vision goggles from 50 ft up. My
wife flashed her tits at them a few times too. (4x gold involved in this
story) After awhile, I thought it might be a good idea to behave. They have
weapons in those choppers. Probably cameras too. The blackhawk squadron is
relocating to Sydney soon, and frankly, I wont miss them .
I'm wondering when the army is going to replace the landrover fleet they
have. They've been in service for more than 15 years now. I reckon they'd be
a good buy if they ever put them out on the market. What would they replace
them with? My bro in law had a great time a few months ago up in the
"villiage" they have up in the ranges. He is a cabnet maker/chippy, and he
was contracted by the army for 3 days to repair the damage the SAS did to
the buildings after they stormed them . $100/hr, free 4x and food, and he
got to watch the action too. He recomends NOT buying ex army GU patrols.
Anyway, blogg over.
Yeah, it's been a bit quiet lately. I even picked a fight with Biggus, and
he didn't bite. I'll be in Melbourne on Weds to Sun, this week. <shudder>

That's novel - using a 4wd to go 4wd'ing! That's the sort of thing that
would be a mystery in inner city Sydney. When we recently got a new 4wd
people seemed really surprised that we intended taking it off road.
Enjoy Melb. At least it's starting to warm up there after winter.

Barnsey,
Yes, I bloody hate it when the campfire attracts all sorts of flying
insects. And yes, they can usually see better than you in the dark, and bite
too!
My (limited) understanding is the army Landrover is only a Landrover in
shape. I thought they were nearly all Perenties, which have (I think) Isuzu
TD motors and running gear in the original Landrover body . I could be
profoundly wrong about this (maybe they have phased them out in favour of
standard Landrovers), but I would dearly love to get hold of a Perentie. i
remember reading about them a few years ago, and they sounded a pretty
well-thought out upgrade for the landrover.
I actually got rain last night, and nearly enough mud to take the
Landcruiser out! However, mustering in the morning on the bikes will be
fun...
Cheers,
Rod.......Out Back

I know the spot well.
You probably reduced the boredom suffered by those blackhawk drivers....
A quick funny story about the military training areas aropund
Townsville.
As anyone who lives in the area from Townsville to Cardwell knows,
about twice a year the FA-18s and the F111s come up to bobm the crap
out of Rattlesnake Island, they engage in this merriment by both night
and day whilst they are there.
In the late eighties I was working towards my night flying rating and
in order to get it quickly I spent several nights flying night circuits
at Townsville to meet the "solo" component of the training.
To reduce costs I hired a Cessna 150 for this. Slow as a wet week, but
just the thing to do alternate left and right circuits of Townsville
airport for several hours.
This happened to co-incide with the FA-18s night bombing Rattlesnake. I
suspect that the RAAF boys were not best pleased to have a C-150
grinding around and around Townsville airport whilst they were trying
to nip over to Rattlesanke, bomb it, nip back for a cuppa more bombs
and go around again themselves.
I noticed that every time an FA-18 was around the few avionics in the
C-150 would quietly lay down and die. I mentioned this to the tower by
way of apology for not responding to one of their calls (they were
having some fun and excitement fitting me in with the fast traffic) and
was told not to worry, it was probably due to being painted by the
FA-18's attack radar.
It's probably a good thing I never wanted to have children.
You and your wife had better hope that Night Vision Goggles were all
that the Blackhawlks were using becuase , if memory serves, they have a
version of the same attack radar as the FA-18s.

David - who chuckles at the thought of what those guys were thinking....

After reading this, I wondered if you have seen this video

usual porn taken by navy helicopter but at the end it shows how far away
they were. So from the sounds of it, they must be able to tell if any in
your family have skin cancer from extreme close-ups :)
