Sounds obscene.

As long as there aren't any rabbits harmed, I suppose that's your business.

Well, after Peter's post last week about solar lighting, I got to
thinking (a dangerous practice at the best of times) and wandered off
to the "Northern Warehouse" and purchased 5 of their $3.99 solar garden
lamps (some assembly required).

They are made of absolute crap plastic, very thin and brittle. They are
also fitted with "flying bomb" or "lucky tiger" NiCd batteries (one per
unit), one of which was leaking already. To save myself a bit of
annoyance later, I ditched the lot and replaced them with some
reasonable quality 2000 MiAH NiMH types (which went close to doubling
the cost).

Next I glued the "spikes" together so that they would not rattle apart
whilst traveling and finally sealed up the solar cell/circuit area with
a bit of good old silastic, noting in passing that whilst the build
quality is crap, the solar cell and circuit board came from the same
factory that made the somewhat expensive "Wagner" solar lamps that
already adorned our garden and have been providing a dim glow for
several years.

To "field test" I then placed them in the garden and awaited nightfall
eagerly.

"She" noted the new lamps and came to one of her instant executive
decisions that they were to remain in-situ as they looked too good
where they were to be packed up and taken camping, besides, as "she" so
succinctly put it, "you take too much sh.t camping anyway" ("she" does
have a point).

There endeth that project.

But I'm now thinking, small solar array, about the size that could keep
a 12~15 amp/hr sealed lead-acid battery charged, and a few of those new
super bright LEDs strung into "rope" lighting. Take up less space and
pack neater.

sorry about the clipping, 5 superbright LEDs pre-mounted on a small board,
comes with plastic things you can use to hang it up or hook it over a thin
rope. removable if you want to DIY a bit.

incredibly bright for their size, and total power usage is 100mw. The boards
run off 12vDC, and I've used 8x1700mah AA's in a small holder to power mine.
Over 30 hours usage, and hasn't dimmed a bit, with power left in the
batteries.

Easily powered off your 'spare' battery, with tiny power levels. Ten of
these would provide enough bright light for a huge tent, and still only use
1w power compared to incandescent bulbs.

What about christmas lights?

Not that it makes any diference to me. I'm  a well documented klutz around
tent ropes, pegs, etc. No matter what, I'll trip over the buggars.

a few high output white led's and some diffusers do a wonderful job . (
needs nicads of course)

Hey Tony, "that place"  in the gulf won't be the same soon. They've found a
big copper reef about 8 Ks from town, which they're going to start mining
next year. It's so big, there's even talk of extending and re developing the
old Greenvale railway line.

I haven't been up to see my mate who owns the pub there, for 6 months or so,
but I imagine he's got a big grin on his dial at the prospect of the
development that's going to happen soon.

Anyway, I suggest checking the place out in the next 6 months if you can,
while it remains one of the last great outback middle of nowhere
destinations........while it lasts.

Barnsey.

You may well be right, but.....

If I could have 25c for every time I've been told in an outback
community in North Western / Gulf of Queensland that "next year XYZ
(insert multinational of your choice) is coming here to mine QRS
(insert mineral of your choice) and the region of ABC (insert locality)
is going to boom like there is no tomorrow, I'd be a very rich man
indeed.

A quick look at the National Native Title registry doesn't reveal any
new consent agreements/right to negotiate/permission to prospect
applications/ etc within a bull's roar of the certain place we are
discussing.

That kind of suggests to me that if in fact something is about to
happen, that it is still in the very formative stages.....

Mind you, Century Zinc got up and running PDQ, so I'm not saying that
it isn't happening, just unlikely.

There was a story on the ABC radio couple of weeks ago about Thurangowra
(gawd I cant spell Barnsey but you know the one) Council  turning the
Greenvale Railway into a walking/cycling track. Apparently it passes through
some incredible gorge country. There was no mention at that time of  any
mine at that time..... would love to be able to walk/cycle it.

I helped build the bastard.

And whilst it does in fact pass through some pretty country, that is
vastly overwhelmed by the exceedingly boring and ugly country it also
passes through.

if I never see the mongrel thing again it will be too soon.

And the other bastards burnt all the sleepers when they unbuilt it.
(We had thoughts of a ute load or three for the garden, but when we
came back north they were all cinders.)

The song makes it sound better than that.  :-)

Jesus wept, Barnsey, what friggin' "gulf" are you talking about?  Up
this way "the gulf" is the Gulf of Carpentaria; but I guess you
southerners may have other ideas. :-)

The Greenvale line goes nowhere near "our" gulf -- much better to try
filling in the missing link Forsayth/Croydon.

Hmm...  Cancel that crap!  Just looked at a map.  Greenvale is not all
that far from Einasleigh, and the road bed Greenvale/Tsv would have to
be *streets* in front of Einasleigh/Cairns.  (Not to mention the
problems with the Kuranda Range section. :-)

Phred, I'm talking about the Gulf of Capenteria, although the town in
question, Einasliegh, is really in the Upper Flinders, more than the Gulf. I
cant find a link to the story, but the copper mine is a definite goer,
starting next year. When I was last there, there were some exploration
drillers staying at the pub. Apparently, the life expectancy of the mine is
about 20 years, on what they've already found, and it's very high grade
copper too. It's more likely that they'll be transporting the copper to
Townsville by road than rebuilding the train line. If that's the case,
they'll need to do some serious road works. The road from Townsville to the
end of Harveys Range is all black top now, by the way, but north from there
is attrocious.

I take your point, Tony,  about the rumours in Nth Qld towns about the next
mining boom, that never happens. When I was at Julia Creek in 97, the town
was buzzing with news about a new mine opening. I think they were just
trying to justify the towns existance. 8 years on, still no
mine............and still no justification for Julia Creek existing. sh.t of
a place!

As for the Greenvale line, I was up in Herveys range last week end, doing a
(wait for it.............) a BUSHWALK!! with my kids. You used to be able to
drive the old line, but recently they've put up signs telling 4wds etc to
piss off or be prosecuted...........or words to that effect. The walk
through the tunnel is interesting. Half way through is a colony of ghost
bats. I cant agree with Tonys opinion of the country side. It's not lush
tropics, but the scenery is spectacular. It would make a great hiking track,
or a 4wd track, but like everything else in Townsville, it will be years
before they finish debating  what to do with it, and make a decision.

And Kathy, here's the correct spelling:

My vision is inverse gravity. Nevertheless, the tub is lifted only 80cm an
I need to crawl beneath, spraying the coating. Hopefully by tomorrow
everything is done and I may put the tub on the chassis back again (it's a
HJ60).

Yeah, almost.  Ive kinda got my head tied up with big ideas that I just cant
finance.  Been looking for a 2nd hand camper trailer/pop up style thing but
good and cheap are very few and far between.

Running the idea of building a makeshift/ home made style like yours Barnsey
till I get enough to buy a real unit.

That illusive Lotto win is still out there Im sure.
