At long last! Woohooo mud on the roof time LOL
I cant wait for the weekend to go out and see if there is actually water in
the gullies. We have been really droughted up here and this is really the
first positive sign of an actualy wet season!
Anyway, had to just share that excitment
kathy.

Lets all hope that its a long steady rain Kathy. God knows you could all
need it as does our Brissie catchment areas.

Nice rain in Townsville since Xmas too.

Ross Dam is still only 7% full though, but my garden looks the best it has
in years.

Might be at your end, nothing but cloud around here so far -- it's
deliberately giving us a miss by the look of it!  :-(

Follow the North going graticle from Saddle Mt. The point at which it
crosses the coast is right about our place.

It's not a "real" wet season yet.

It's only rained intermittently for a week not a continuous downpour.
My shoes and belt have not yet started to grow mould.
We still have power.

Like I said, not a real wet yet.

I'm wondering what will happen to all the people with homes built on
flood plains and on former swamps if we actually do have a good old wet
like last seen in the late 70s and early 80s....

That said, it's buggered our plans for a long weekend away.

Same in Townsville Tony. $400k houses built on hillsides known, in the past,
for landslides, or beaches known for tide surges in a cyclone. A serious
cyclone here would be more devastating than the last "big" one in 1974.
People have built houses, and planted trees, etc where they just don't
belong. On top of that, the majority of the population of TSV haven't seen a
cyclone before, and probably wont prepare themselves. I've been through 6-7
Cat 1 cyclones since I moved here in 94. They were bad enough, but no worse
than some of the storms in Victoria. .

I was up in the tablelands in December, BTW. We stayed at a town called
Yungaburra. Very nice. It's been several years since I've seen Milla Milla
falls. Still beautiful, but only a trickle of water, compared to when I last
saw it in 1994 (?)

Anyway, here's hoping for a proper wet season, and the rain comes to those
people and places that really need it.

Somewhere around Palm Cove?  (Bit hard to see properly at the moment
because you're still getting my rain. :-)

>It's not a "real" wet season yet.

It's been looking quite promising this evening -- but that's all we've
had here, promises.  (19 points to 0900 today and another 11 to 1900.
Our best 24-hour fall this "wet" is still only 57 points.  Unless
things spark up in the next week it'll be close to the driest January
here in 100 years.)

EffNQEB (or whoever they are now) has fixed all those rotten poles
down there?

At least it might stop those "beach" dwellers complaining about other
people wanting to live there too.

Clifton Beach.

I had a look just before bed last night and it seemed to me that the
Tablemands was getting a decent bath.

> At least it might stop those "beach" dwellers complaining about other

Yeah well... The pace of development over the past couple of years has
been staggering, as we still only have single lane access past Kerwarra
I predict that there will be traffic jams within the next year.

We are talking about moving, where I want to go with work means I'd
like to live somewhere smaller, so it's not beyond probability that the
Tablelands will get 2 more residents. I'm actively looking everywhere
from Ingham North.

And just to throw in a little relevancy. For the past couple of months
I've been parking on the old Railway site opposite the Qld public
service building in town. Yesterday I had to give 3 people a tug out of
their parking spots because the rain has turned that ex-industrial site
into a quagmire. You'd think that the owner of a small, low slung fWD
vehicle with bicycle trainer wheels for tyres would be smart enough not
to drive into mud wouldn't you......

Cheers

Some bits did.  Walkamin got 38 mm for the 24 hours to 0900 today, and
Kuranda 21; but even A'ton only got 8 mm.
<http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ60129.html>

I ended up with a quarter of an inch (6.3 mm) in the front yard.  Been
drizzling (well, light mist) on and off since but barely enough to
measure.  Been a good drop or two around T'ville and places south
though -- and still getting a soaking by the look of the radar.
<http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR212.loop.shtml>

Seem to be a few road closures down that way already according to
the ABC, and a flood warning has been issued for the Haughton.
<http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ20740.html>

Be interesting to see how that low off Lucinda develops.  I've often
wondered how close to the coast a cyclone could form here!

I've no doubt there have been problems with the pace of development,
but from my perspective the whole place has been stuffed for decades.
Palm Cove, for example, was a great place in 1965; last time I had a
look was probably 20 years ago and I couldn't be bothered going back.

Like the town with 363 days of sunshine/year.  ;-)

Why?  They drive around on toy wheels after all.  ;-)

I've just been out for a drive around some tracks on the outskirts of
Townsville. I reckon we'll be getting some road closures VERY soon. The BOM
web site says we've only has 20 mm sice 9.00am. More like 200!!
All very nice.

Hey Barnsey, if you're still there, have a squiz at:

<http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ65358.html>

for the Haughton R. level at Powerline. (They haven't put up the Giru
gauge yet -- it was there this time last year, but no sign of it now.)

Cheers, Phred.
