It is time to put some new rubber on the landcruiser, the question is what
tyre do I go for

BFG A/T                  275/70/16
Cooper    ST            265/75/16
Bridgestone A/T       275/70/16

I do mainly black top and Vic high country so nothing too extreme

Any good or bad reports on any of these.

                                                           Thanks    Roc

Go for the Coopers or BFG, Ive had both in Muddies but only ATs in BFG, have
a look under www.4bys.com.au (I think thats the web site, google them
otherwise, Ipswich Road Moorooka, Brisbane. Good feedback on Coopers).

I have had Cooper ATR tyres on the Mu for about 5000 kms. Very pleased
indeed with them so far. Quiet on seal, good grip in the wet, good on
gravel.

I'm saving up for a set of Coopers. For what I do, I think they'd be the
best. There's 4-5 different types, to suit the conditions they'll
travel.........cant remember the name of the ones I've picked out. I like
the side wall thickness over the other brands.
Meanwhile, I'm still nervously driving on those crap Maxxis that were on the
car when i bought it.

I was impressed by the range of Cooper tyres and settled on the new ATR
(just superceded the AT but at the same price) as being absolutely ideal for
the type of driving I use the Mu for.

Here in NZ the price difference between Maxxis $180 and Cooper ATR's $285
for the Mu.

Yes, they're expensive, but so is the wrath of a wife and 5 kids with failed
tyres in 36 degree heat in the middle of no where.

I don't drive in mud, or sand, (much) so I'm after a good highway tyre that
will be good for dirt roads, and sharp rocks. I'm trying to recall what Rod
Outback reckoned was a good tyre.  My driving conditions are similar.

Barnsey,

I have a set of Cooper ST's on my cruiser at present.  I bought them
for doing trips(no bush-bashing), but broke my collarbone a few days
after doing my last trip(Dec 12), and the tyres have been on the truck
ever since.  VERY happy with the Cooper tyres.  I've been amazed that
I havent done one in a blowout to date.  I would've expected at least
one blow with the rocks on the main road to town... I did one (a week
after they were fitted) to a nail, but it was repaired, and hasnt
played up in the subsequent 4000 kms. As someone else mentioned, I am
also  impressed at how much thicker the sidewalls are than many others
on the market.  Very few tyres here wear out; most blow from a
sidewall tear.  I will be really interested to see how these Coopers
go.

The ST tread is more a road tyre than anything else, but they still
work pretty well in the mud.  We drove 40 kms home in the middle of a
thunderstorm, and the cruiser feels much more controllable over the
standard Factory SP Road-Grippers. Black soil still makes the car feel
like its skating on ice, but there is a lot more directional control
over the standard tyres.

Most of my driving in this rig(to date) is the road to town, as well
as extended trips on bitumen. The Coopers are much nicer to drive on
the bitumen as well; a lot less body roll.  No doubt much of this is
due to the wider tyres, but I think those thicker sidewalls on the
Coopers contribute as well.

To date; very happy. Mine are mounted on ROH alloy rims, and all up
seem to weigh less than the steel split rims with standard tyres.

Hope this helps; Lost my sent news postings the other day when OE
died, so havent yet bothered to recover them. Otherwise I'd go track
down what I wrote last time. Agent news reader does the job fine, but
I suppose I should recover the data files at least...

Cheers,

Barnsey,

Profound apologies; I typed that while the cruiser was sitting out of
the rain in the far shed.  I took it out this arvo, and lo and behold,
I have Coopers Discoverer HT tyres!  Many apologies.

Cheers,

If your in NZ why didnt you try for the Firestone Firehawk ATRs, they are a
good all-rounder and cheap as chups.

I used to have a set of RMTs while I was there, they set me back less than a
grand for 4 on the car. $960 from memory

They don't make them for a 16 inch wheel. The 1996 Mu went to 16 inch with
the facelift.

That was what was on it already and I only needed 2 so I got the same.

I thought it sounded expensive, but figured that must be the going price
these days.

We do live in a regional area so we won't get them as cheap as in the city.

has anyone heard anything about Mickey Thompson Bajay MTX?
I'm looking to retyre my Pathfinder for a run up the Birdsville track,
and these have been recommended.
Any opinions, good or bad appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

AJ from the patrol forums runs them. He likes them, does a lot of
trips round flinders, but in anything soft as Mud/Clay they are
worthless. We had to drag him round Toolangi one weekend..
