Roof bars

I used to own a roofrack but found it too hard to get on and off for the
carport. It was a steel one, and even empty made a negative impact of the
vehicles handling. So I sold it.
Now I need to carry at least a spare tyre without wheel somewhere. I've been
thinking roof bars.
Are they suitable ? What are the "best" ones for my purpose, remembering
that the vehicle is a series 80 that attracts corros like flies to  *insert
whatever comes to mind* ? How much rubbish can I carry with these bars?
OH...and I had a ladder on my rack. How do people without ladders get up on
a rack, over the bonnet ?

Cheers

The old MQ used to have a very solid roof rack. It was referred to as "The
Moon Roof" and yes, the ladder at the back was great.

(No booze buses at Lawn Hill)

I've been thinking the same about roof racks, for the GQ but I think I'll
buy a trailer instead............once I sell the camper trailer I've got
sitting doing nothing.

Much more practical I reckon.

I pulled a stock trailer to Cooktown over the Bloomfield  many years ago.
Diesel everywhere, spare tyre bolt sheared and I spent time finding the
spare which had passed me.
These days the trailers have decent suspension...well at least on paper.
One couple I know bought a new C/T at $28K and took it on 2 easy trips
before the suspension stuffed...maybe we havent come so far as I thought.

I've got an aluminium rack on my 80 that is pretty much a copy of the big
name brands, but bought for about half the cost from a guy who builds them
in his back shed.  Has taken a lot of punishment (corrugations & big loads)
and no probs with it.  I get up there by putting one of the back windows
down and stepping up on top of the door.  I lay an old towel over the door
to prevent scratches.

If you're going to go for bars, Rola or Rhino would handle a spare wheel no
probs.  The Rhino bars are a little bit stronger than the Rolas, but are a
bit uglier too (not nearly as ugly as Barnesy's moon roof though).  I think
the Rola racks are rated at 40kg per bar.
