well it's not affecting us in southern QLD, it's 1000klms away
just a but of rain and some bigger seas and thats about it

the FNQ comunities deal with them a lot more often and are usually well
prepared for cyclones

I heard that you need to fit two cyclones for effective f.cking up of real
estate. Turbo timers are good too.

Cairns looks like its come through just fine.

At the Northern beaches we had a few hours of VERY strong gusts, few tress
down, and the ones still standing have lost a lot of leaves.

I'd like to tell you how high the winds actually got, but a tree branch
took out the anemometer rotating head and screwed the memory in the base
unit. When I tried to download the data, there was nothing there.

About the only other thing to come out of this cyclone for us is that the
genny needs a new muffler...Damm thing has rusted out since last used and
boy is it loud.

Innisfail, Mission Beach and Kurramine seem to be a different story, early
reports talk of rows of Mission Beach houses that just aren't there
anymore.

Given the age of buildings in Innisfail itself, I don't hold out much hope
of them withstanding 300kph winds at all. The fact that there are no
reports from Innisfail is ominous, around 6am there was a report that the
Disaster HQ in Innisfail was about to be blown flat, and that was an hour
before the eye crossed the coast.

Also looks like the main power feed is busted somewhere inland from
Cardwell, might not have mains power anywhere in FNQ for a few days.

Lastly.

Barnsey, and the people whose names I can't remember who live on the
Tablelands, You guys all OK?

Cheers

Just heard that there is another cyclone forming in pretty much the same
spot "larry" did.

Think I might suggest "Curly" or "Mo" to BOM as name suggestions.

Mareeba
can't get much closer than that

his online weather station dropped out with wind gusts maxing out at
91.8kph and a sustained wind speed max of 64kph

it is sitting at 2.6kph righ now
Not sure how far from Mareeba or what direction this place is bit the
eye is just south of Mareeba

the online radio scanner feed is working well, lots of info coming from
the emergency services

Fortunately the US Marines in Townsville (for some training) have left
so there is no chance of looting or rioting, civilisation will not be
threatened.

Interesting responses from our politicians -

John Howard - Queensland can have access to military helicopters as
soon as its safe to fly out of Townsville. Any other military resources
as required - just ask. At least he's stepped up for once. Thank god
he did nt go to the George Bush school of emergency management.

Peter Beattie - declared State of Emergency on Sunday allowing the cops
to move people out of unsafe properties.

Emergency management and disaster plan initiated on Saturday.

At 11am Monday assessors are alraedy moving into the area hit by
the centre of the storm, going is hard, tress over roads, creeks flooded
maybe some bridges are out as well. Power is off - deliberately shut
down until lines are repaired.

Gotta love some of the eyewitness phone reports,

"Its a bit windy"

"Theres a few tress down, but they'll grow back"

"Just seen a roof go by"

"My son has missed show and tell, thats why he's whinging"

Just heard another gem

"The wind is so strong its bent all our bananas"

No woriies in Townsville..........so far (3 PM) As ususual, I'm on night
shift, so I watched the BOM radar all last night. I've got freinds and
relatives in Innisfail and we're about worried about them. If it's all clear
by Friday, and we can get in touch, we'll offer to help out in what ever way
we can, clean up? stay with us in TSV? bring beer? (Uncle Graham LOL!)

I'm glad it didn't hit here. Although my house is insured, it would be heart
breaking to see the last 5 years of sweat and tears get blown away.
