Nissan Patrol major issue

Hi, I'm having a nightmare time with my 3.0 turbodiesel Patrol, (Y61),
2000 vintage and I'm wondering if anyone in this group can shed some
light on things.

She's done 100,000 miles of mainly motorway driving in the UK.  Last
month the car revved violently on the road and began pouring huge
quantities of grey smoke thru the exhaust into the skies.  The turbo
was suspected and oil was found in the inlet.  Our garage reported that
the seals had failed and oil was then passed into the engine - hence
the smoke. This cost about 1500 UK pounds to fix.

OK, these things happen and I've found info on an au site that states
that early 3.0 TD were prone to oil delivery problems - and a fix was
found by raising the oil capacity.  I doubt this would have been done
to UK spec models.  Now for the mystery.

Exactly 7 days after our Patrol returns home, she blows up again.  This
time power is lost but no smoke.  The garage who originally repaired
her said their diagnostic computer now reports a fuel pump problem.
Now we've been quoted 2000 UK pounds to sort that out - the car is
worth about 7000.  Can any one tell me if these two major faults are
linked and/or common, or point to a much more serious problem that
would suggest our Patrol is now fit for scrap?  Nissan GB said "that's
just what we call bad luck". Are they right?

Thanks in advance for any comments. Regards, Adam

Don't know about your specific problems but the V6 diesel engines of
that era have a bad tendancy to blow up - replacement engine required -
expensive. Not sure of the exact problems but they were serious.

Do a search of archives on the forums with ExploreOZ as the problem has
been mentioned many times there. Good luck, sounds like you need some.

This is a well documented problem with the first 3.0 Patrols. Biggus will be
here soon, to sink his boot in to the 3.0 and have a laugh at your expense.
Basically, they were a lemon of an engine. 100,000 K is spot on for them to
self destruct.

I'm thinking that the volume of sales in Australia was greater than in the
UK. Nissan (Aust) fixed or replaced the early 3.0 motors, regardless of age
or milage. Maybe you could contact Nissan in the UK and see what they're
willing to do.They repsonded quite reasonably here in Aust, and acknowledged
the problem, and compensated the owenrs as best they could,. You might need
to push a bit harder with nissan UK.

The series 2 and 3 GU 3.0 are relatively hassle free, although some people
still wont go near them, will they Biggus? The first one was nightmare, as
you well know. AFAIK, Nissan sorted it out after the series 1 and the 3.0 is
a much better all round engine than the ancient 4.2 alternative, in 2001-2
onwards GUs.

So try again with Nissan. If there's no joy , I'd patch it up and piss it
off ASAP. It's a major dint in the Patrols history. Sorry to hear you were
caught out.

them now....

Many thanks to you all - I had a hunch that posting on an au 4x4 site
would get a good response.  I'll do a bit more searching and poke
Nissan GB. Adam.
