Advice on Terracan

Hi all,

I have a friend who recently sold his Pajero and bought a Prado.  He doesn't
like it and will be getting rid of it after only a couple of months, but
that is niether here nor there.

His dilema is whether to buy a brand spanking new Terracan (specs are pretty
impressive) or a 2nd hand (only 20K on the clock) 2004 Pajero.  He is
looking at diesel.

We both have or had Pajeros, so we are familiar with them, but I was
wondering if anyone might have some feedback on the Terracan.  I am chasing
constructive criticism or good points, maybe a story or two you have heard
that may indicate good/bad points.  I don't want this to turn into a
"toyota/nissan" slinging match about peoples favourites.

He is keen on the Pajero (loved his last one), but the Terracan delivers
better specs and is roughly $12K cheaper.

Any (constructive) information muchly appreciated.

Had a cousin(Emerald, QLD) took a Terracan & a Prado for a test drive
a couple of months back.  VERY impressed with the power in the
terracan, and felt it was a pretty darn attractive option instead of a
Prado.  Dont think he looked at Pajeros as a comparison, though.

My main incentive for the Prado is where I live.  Damn sight more
likely I will get parts & service for my Toyota than a Hyundai (dont
think we have a Hyundai local service agent - possibly a sub-agent).
If I was living on the coast, and within an hour or two of a Hyundai
service agent, I'd consider one more seriously.

Nearly everyone I know who have had a Hyndai have been happy with them
for their reliability and doing the job they were bought for. Mate who
is a diehard falcoon fan has had a Hyundai for over 10 years now as
the second car, and it has performed flawlessly.  All that I have read
about the Terracan is that they are very good. I know some earlier
Hyundais were louder and more vibration than equivalent Toyotas, but
vastly cheaper, and just as reliable. The few articles I recall on the
Terracan was it was pretty darn good.

My $0.02

Cheers,

The $12000 cheaper should give you a clue

obviously something wrong with the guy if he didn't like the Prado
far better than the Mitsubishi product
but what would I know

I know that the Toyota would NEVER let him down

Driven a few of the new 3.2 diesel Pajero's at work and I have to say that I
was VERY impressed.  So impressed in fact I have requested one as a new work
bus, instead of the 3.0ltr TD Patrol I have now.  My reasoning for this is
because of the number of road km's I do in the work bus, the Pajero is
simply better outfitted I believe for long km's.  The ride is better as are
the creature comforts and they are getting more important for me as well.
We also only get automatics in my department and the Pajero performs a hell
of allot better in the auto than the Patrol does.  It has better economy and
pulls a bit harder up the hills than the auto TD Patrol.

A few friends on the coast have decided on the Terracan.  For what they used
it for (light beach work, pulling boats and some very light off road work
about state forests) they loved it.  However like Rod, parts are a concern
for me.  Likewise I can see some issues should you want to modify the
vehicle, there is not the demand on the aftermarket for allot of gear for
them...yet.  I recall reading in one of the mags though that you can now
option up to a slightly more rugged suspension package at the time of
purchase for the Terracan now. Whereas with the Pajero, nearly all
aftermarket suppliers have gear for them in one shape or another.

I guess it boils down to the case of what you want to do with it, how much
cash you have, whether you have hang ups about 2nd hand vehicles V new and
how you want to modify the vehicle?

I know people who have both, and both families are happy with their cars.
Neither do any hard off road work but both vehicles have seen Central
Australia,Conner Country  and the  South East Victorian High Country and
both have had no problems. In my opinion if you are keeping it for up to 5
years go the Terracan a lot cheaper and probably better value, if you are
keeping it longer (up to ten years or longer) I would get something else but
no necessarily a Pajero.

Thank you to everyone who replied (even you Kev).  It has been very
informative and most helpful.

Cheers,
