Suggestions for first-timer 4WD?

Hi all,

I am currently investigating the possibilities of purchasing a 4WD, for
mild-medium offroad recreational use in the Goldfields, Western Australia.
(Laverton, to be precise).  The terrain in this area is mostly red dirt,
with the usual odd assortment of rocks, etc.

Not having much experience with 4WDs, I am after some suggestions.

Priorities:

Reasonable economy
Reasonable acceleration for overtaking on country roads, etc
Offroad ability
< $15,000

As the vehicle will only be carrying my girlfriend and I, we don't
necessarily need four doors.  Having said that, a bit of space might be nice
for camping, sleeping inside the vehicle, etc.
I don't need anything too extreme (Landcruiser troopcarrier, etc), but
something which will give a good balance between on- and off-road ability,
and it must be affordable.

Is Hilux Surf the way to go?  Any other suggestions?

Also, I know very little about diesel.  Given that it is so expensive in the
country, would it be better to go for petrol (or even LPG?) ?

Thanks in advance.

Surf / 4Runner / Hilux would be the go. Pity your not in Brisbane I could
sell ya mine.

They are very capable and if ya not doing more than 50K a year try find a
good condition RV6, Ive found mine to be great on long trips and offroad.

Good luck.

Scotty

PS. If you after something that will overtake in less than 5kms dont go for
a 2.4 deisel.

Hilux diesel (turbo if you can afford) would be the way, choose your own
body type, single cab, trayback, extra cab, dual cab etc.
Well proven, plenty of parts, new & second hand.
Maybe a camper trailer to go with it later.

g, go diesel. Much more range from a tank, availiable everywhere. More low
down grunt.
Hope you find that filthy yellow stuff, bloody hard work :)

Cheers

Maybe Patrol 4.2diesel ute or 2 door Short Wheel Base with a camper trailer,
unbreakable driveline, parts should be reasonable out there, not as good as
Toyota though.
Figjam (AKA Biggus Dickus) - 06 Jun 2006 10:20 GMT
drive train is unbreakable coz they dont produce enough horsepower to break
anything

:)

Yeah when if you are dumb enought to use new tyres at the dragstrip you are
a joke.

And if you can't take a friendly bit of inter-brand ribbing you are just an
over aggro dickhead.

You're just an over aggro violent clown who brings a bad image on the rest
of the 4WD community, hope to never share a campfire with people of your
attitude, original poster and other people please note he is not a true
indication on the respectable people in the 4x4 community.

Look at your name troll & dare accuse others of penis egocentric behaviour.

knowing I am going to attract flak from all directions, I would suggest
a suzuki sierra, but not the silly jimny's !! I had a sierra for 5 years
and it was unstopable. Added some 225 olympic bushrangers (sadly no
longer available) and it would climb any sand dune, cross creeks and was
ok on distances. I drove it from perth - karatha - perth for a holiday
trip and was cruising on 120 most of the way. If you can pick up one of
the LWB models it would be worth it. I was in the suzi club in perth for
a few years and had quite alot of fun.

Alas, time passes, the suzi is long gone and my F350 6.5L is the current
workhorse.

If you are looking for a 4x4 and not a luxury saloon, avoid electrics ie
windows / seats / mirrors. They are just something else to go wrong when
you are bumping along rough roads.
