Reccomend reliable stero for the Landcruiser?

Rod Out Back - 13 Jun 2006 09:45 GMT Folks,
Given we are looking for a new topic or two...
Not 12 months down the track from fitting the JVC stereo to the new Landcruiser ute, I find myself thinking about turfing it for something that actually works as advertised...
The unit I fitted is a single-CD unit, with a flip-down face to insert the disc. A stereo specialist place in Rockhampton waxed lyrical about how good JVC, and I was silly enough to believe him. I didnt like the slimey barstard salesman beforehand, and I sure as hell dont like him much now...I specifically asked what the anti-skip was like in the JVC models, and he tells me they are all much the same. Bollocks!
...I listened to him because he did a half-decent job on designing and installing my mates AV setup in his living room, and I mistakenly thought he might be of similar good advice on the stereo in the car...
Silly me!
...They do install car stereos on the premises, though I'd like to meet a happy customer...
I noticed that within a few months of installing the JVC, the anti-skip doesnt seem to work as well as the Pioneer unit I installed in the old cruiser ute. The Pioneer was also a single-disc model, but had the disc-slot through the front panel. This made it easier to load, but it makes it easier to suck dust into the player as well. At least the flip-down front seems to prevent dust getting into the player as easily...
Given these single-disc units are pretty cheap for name brands these days, I wondered if anyone had any good reports on any of the brands? Particularly looking for decent anti-skip, and reliability in dust(if such a beast exists...).
Sony? Pioneer? Alpine? Fujitsu Ten? JVC(Hack, Hack, spit!)? Others?
Also, any thoughts on DVD players, rather than CD? Not that I'm interested in watching video, but the ability to load 6 or more albums onto one disc has some appeal...More if I converted them into MP3... A stacker might solve the problems of both dust and the vibration issues, but I would prefer the single-disc model if possible. However, I'm open to all ideas...
Dont bother telling me what a silly bugger I was to listen to the slimey twat slaesman; I already know!
Advice on good brands to suit a 4WD welcomed...
Cheers,

Many thanks for that. I have seen a few Alpines over the years, and did wonder how they performed. I'll have a look at some when venturing to Rocky at the end of the month.
Is yours a single-disc, or a stacker?
Cheers,

Figjam (AKA Biggus Dickus) - 14 Jun 2006 07:33 GMT Hi Rod mine is an actual tape deck/tuner connected to a 12 stacker wich used to live under the seat on the rocky and now on the seat of the toy.As you would know theres no room under the toy seats.

Rainbow Warrior - 13 Jun 2006 10:11 GMT My Sony mp3 player was $300 and has been good for 2 years, around 120-200 songs per disc depending on what resolution you rip them, have my whole music collection on hard drive 1100 songs, and just burn a new CD every month when I get bored. More songs also means harder to find the one you want, so I just leave it on random.

Its possible that he is correct and JVC's are usually good but you just happen to have got a bad one. Is it still covered by warranty? I fitted a Kenwood MP3 player to my Hilux about 18mths ago and I've had no trouble with it but I doubt its subjected to the conditions yours has to put up with.

AM - 13 Jun 2006 10:45 GMT Rod,
I had an Alpine MP3 CD player in my old car (Subaru Forester), and never had it skip when offroad...
Mates with other brands, not the same positive feedback...
I've had Alpine in 3-4 cars, and no problems yet!
> Folks, > [quoted text clipped - 51 lines] > > Rod.....Out Back Muddy - 13 Jun 2006 11:05 GMT Is the radio on the JVC still working? How about an Ipod with one of the radio broad cast whosimawhatsits? We use one a work now and it has not missed a beat. The flip side being that you can slip it in a pocket when you're away from the car as well fencing or marking or just about anything else... (okay I am stretching it you could have he stereo in the car up loud...) But then again you could always transfer it to the header without needing to hassle about with CD's and stuff. Allot of guys where I work are starting to go that way as well especially guys lobbing from trucks, to tractors and then the ute at the end of the day.
Just a thought.
Muddy.

Yes, the JVC still operates fine, but I can see the end is in sight... At least the Pioneer survived a few years before the CD player choked....
Yes, I have explored the option to go an Ipod type device, but I would really prefer a proper CD player in the cruiser. I have tried a few of the things like an MP3 player that hooked in through the FM, and it adds clutter to the cabin, and you have 2 sets of crontrols for music, rather than just the one. I would prefer a dedicated CD player.
I do have a PDA that I use out & about (Motorbike/Loader/Grader/truck) for music, but I would prefer something less fiddly for the Landcruiser when I'm travelling. The cabin is usually full of odds & ends within a few mintues of hitting the road, and having an additional music control just adds to the clutter...
Thanks for the idea, though.

Thanks for that; I will have another look at the options in Pioneer when looking in Rocky at the end of the month. I didnt see any Pioneer models with the flip-down front when I bought the last unit, but then I hadnt realised how much that cover protects the internals, so I might have just missed them.
The anti-skip in the Pioneer I fitted to the 75 cruiser ute in 2003 was pretty darn hard to get to skip. I just assumed the JVC would be similar. Apparently not!
I think I'm narrowing the field down to Pioneer and Alpine.
Many thanks again for your thoughts.

I believe that there was something along the lines of a 'Loud Bass' mud run earlier this year at either Land Cruiser Mountain park or Rover park. There was something about it in an ealier edition of Aus 4wd Monthly mag. The louder the doof doof while driving, the more points... Or at least that is how the article came across as.

Rod, I used to install audio gear for a living, Ive owned several 4x4s and each time I tranplant my Alpine into my lastest 4x4. About the only time that you will get skipping on an alpine is when your on long corrogations and beleive me thats ANY CD player will do that regardless of brand or model. Oh and I got mine to skip when landing from a 3ft air jump butonly for a second ;o)
The only way you can get around it these days is useing MP3 technology with USB or HDD devices as they dont use any moving parts to skip with. If your useing a disc it will skip.
But as far as quality units I would recommend Alpine definately. All my gear has been alpine ecept speakers, I personally think that they are a tad overpriced for what ya get and the Subs just dont go hard enough, all else is money well worth spending on.
PS Expect to pay anywhere up to $800 for a decent single din unit. Top end units are very pricey but well worth the money.
Sydneysider - 19 Jun 2006 10:29 GMT Sure you want a CD player?
I've a Patrol and was looking for something to keep the music going when you hit the corrugations. Ended up buy a $250 Sony with CD/MP3 player etc, but more importantly an Aux in on the front. Went and bought a Flash MP3 player (IRiver/Apple Nano) and connected it through the Aux port to the headphones socket. Beauty of a flash player over an Ipod is no moving parts - you can shake/jog bounce this to buggery with no effect - it will eventually kill the spinning hard disk inside an Ipod. I got the 1GB version and fitted 240 songs on it. Nano - $213, IRiver $167.
(got the IRiver first - 15hrs playback from a single AA - no additional 12v power required. However - a tip for the wise - IRiver do not support Windows 2000, and since I don't have Win XP I ended up taking it back and swapping for the Nano.) $18 for the 12V adaptor.
We've basically managed to get all our favourite songs from about 50CD's onto it and I suspect the CD player on the Sony will get very little use from now on! - other advantage - your could always plug in the headphones if one of you want a bit of peace and quite for a while on a long drive......
Just a thought...

Rod Out Back - 19 Jun 2006 22:38 GMT >Sure you want a CD player? > [quoted text clipped - 20 lines] > >Sydneysider Reasons against a solid-state MP3 player (of which I have 2) is that I want something that allows me to play store-bought discs. Until downloading songs to a payer is as quick & simple as buying a new CD, I'll keep the MP3 player for when I'm riding the motorbike.
I can pick up a new disc in a shop, throw it into the player, and listen to it for an hour or two while I'm on the road. An mp3 player requires a lot more stuffing around than that.
Dont get me wrong; they have their uses. The one I use for the bike has been brilliant, but it isnt what I want for the vehicle.
