Rod Out Back - 09 Jul 2006 00:33 GMT Folks,
Back yesterday from a trip to Rockhampton for a week. A mates' 40th to attend, and related socialising. It also gave me a chance to pick up some gear we needed, as well as find out about some options for upcoming projects...
Following reccommendations/advice from people here, I picked up an Alpine single-disc CD player. It was interesting to see that when asking the Rocky Car Sound people about their thoughts on brand, they reccommended Alpine as soon as I said it was a Cruiser ute. They said these were the most capable at handling the vibration. They sold JVC, Alpine & Panasonic car stereos offthe shelf. Price-wise, Alpine were slightly dearer than the JVC models with the same features, but the difference is really bugger-all. The unit comes with a cable to connect an Ipod, but I doubt I will go this option any time soon. Nice to have the option, anyway.
It took about half an hour to remove the JVC player and replace it with the Alpine. The Alpine is a bit easier to figure out the controls without reading the manual 5 times (The JVC still has some functions I dont seem to be able to get to work without holding the manual in one hand...). Most of my time was spent deciding what sort of connectors to use...
My mate had been considering putting a CD player into his wifes work car, and so the JVC now has a new home that isnt likely to test out the (crap) anti-skip features on it much...
The Alpine seems to have slightly clearer sound than the JVC, and the display screen has more info on it. The more important result was the whole trip without it skipping once. This was even on the dirt, where the road is pretty corrugated in places, and I even caught a little air-time over one cattle-grid where they've changed the approaches in the past week... Through all this, the Alpine didnt miss a beat. The JVC skipped a few times on the same return trip home last year after fitting it, and was even worse when I was heading down to Rocky a week ago...
So, in finishing up, I would like to thank those that reccommended Alpine. For years, I had thought they were a brand that was more flash than substance, and I have very happily been proved wrong.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Rod.....Out Back

That an Alpine too ? I havent got around to putting a CD in yet but was leaning towards the Nano since its all solid state and I can tap into the existing cassette radio.

Think it like this, Alpine make nothing but car audio, where do you think that they spend all thier R&D money? Not tellies or toasters. I used to install car audio for a living and I can tell you without a doubt that when judging sound competitions Alpines were ALWAYS in the finals.
There are without a doubt some great sounding units out there but Alpine is consistantly good quality. The only thing I dont like abotu Alpine is their low grade speakers, the high end stuff is great but theres better out there than the Type S stuff.
Tell us what ya listen to and how loud ya like it and what ya buget is and a system can be designed for you.
Rheilly Phoull - 09 Jul 2006 10:43 GMT >>> mine too is 10 yo and still gives awesome dampning on extreme trax >>> [quoted text clipped - 26 lines] > Tell us what ya listen to and how loud ya like it and what ya buget > is and a system can be designed for you. Well to be frank I can hear SFA when we're on the track ! and the sound gear only gets used on the black stuff or smooth going. I wouldn't want space consuming subs either so I'm mainly thinking that I'll change out the factory door speakers and live with the output of the player as it comes.

What ya driving? Ive hidden subs in many places without taking up any room. I got to hide two 12inch subs in my old 4runner, not a scaric of space taken up that wasnt already wasted. Id amp whatever you had anyway, a quality amp does wonders over a stock headunit any day. Even a small 20x4 amp (True 20Watts not this sh.t that head units are rated at!) will do youd system proud. Quality speakers in place of standard ones make even a head unit sound good though, well unless its the stock unit which Im sure is designed to sound like sh.t.
Figjam (AKA Biggus Dickus) - 09 Jul 2006 11:44 GMT ok dude where would you hide any amp or say 10" mids in a landcruiser 75 ute ?

Scotty - 10 Jul 2006 08:07 GMT To be honest Im not sure what a 75 series looks like inside.
Generally amps go under seats, in behind panels, up under the dash behind the glovebox etc. Subs can go many places such as rear doors, rear luggage space panels, under seats, post some pics of your interior and shop me whats there. Im not saying that any car can have subs, but with some basic fabrication theres usually room for at least one 10inch.

I did car audio for 4years, long enough to know where you can and cant shove audio gear. I havent done it for a while and thats why I cant recall what the interior looks like. Fricken hell, Ive done tons of Corrollas, Commodores, escorts, vans, and basically most types, shapes and sizes in all sorts of systems.
Now, what was your f.cked up comments again? Your a dickhead, go back to shaggin ya sister dude, shes finished with the scout group.
Figjam (AKA Biggus Dickus) - 10 Jul 2006 10:33 GMT Now now there little boy refrain from useing such language seeins ya cant come up with decent comeback shut ya mouth. It is yet to be discovered how knowledgable your skills are if you did infact toil in the audio industry if you have absolutely nfi of the interior of a toyota landcruiser thats bin our for like 21 years. So in future keep ya comments to ya snifly boy bedroom. HTH

Scotty - 10 Jul 2006 11:40 GMT In reply to Rheilly Phoull, whats the rig? a cab chassis or troopy style?
How much room is there behind the seats if its a single cab? How much room under the seats? Do you have 1/4 light windows up front?
Rheilly Phoull - 11 Jul 2006 08:05 GMT > In reply to Rheilly Phoull, whats the rig? a cab chassis or troopy > style? > How much room is there behind the seats if its a single cab? How much > room under the seats? Do you have 1/4 light windows up front? 95 GQ LWB . One piece windows. Under drivers seat and passenger seat taken :-) Rear side panels covered by drawer system which is not easily removed. Rear seats are removed and space used for luggage etc.

IE Mounting a speaker in the draw cavity. May shorten a draw by 300mm or so. how about side panels? Accessible with small amount of door fabrication? Its a four door right? How about mounting speakers in rear doors? How much bass do you want? What type of music do you listen to?

We listen to most music apart from head bangin' stuff. Probably an amp and new speakers would do me, mebbe a couple a piezo's around the dash for a bit of

I'd have to second that. I've used Pioneer, Kenwood and Alpine. Pioneer make good units too but I have always felt that Alpine were just one step ahead.

Rocatanski - 09 Jul 2006 04:21 GMT Rod just remember the Ipod hook up is great in the rough stuff as hard drives don't stop on bumps and vibrations. I use the kids I River MP# players all the time in my cruiser.

Yes, they will crash, how you mount them can help though.
My home-brew car pc (built from rubbish pile scavengings in an MDF case) has the hdd mounted vertically to minimise the chances of sudden bumps causing a head crash.
ie. Disk platters are like this with the heads between: | | |Hd| | |
As opposed to the usual: ---- Hd ----
If I had been able to, I would have also mounted it so that forward/backward bumps were coped with (so must remember to not run into anything)

Rocatanski - 09 Jul 2006 10:09 GMT I sit our I River H10 MP3 player in the console hooked up to the player and I have never had a problem, this includes travel on the Oodnadatta & Strzelecki tracks etc never missed a song. This is not to say your MP3 players hard drive didn't sh.t itself, just I have never had that problem.

MP3s with less than 1gig usually dont have HDDs to crash anyway. Anything less is likely to be SD memory or similar.

Anything > less is likely to be SD memory or similar. Yep, I have a 1gig iRiver, no moving bits, it stores around 200 songs, but I get around 180songs on a CD using a MP3 that my Sony reads fine over bumps & corrigations.
Trouble with that many songs is finding a particular one, so I just keep hitting shuffle to I get what I like.

I got a Nano copy pretty cheap that has 2gig which gives a reasonable 'library'.

No, you get moods to listen to different stuff since I have near 1100 mp3 tracks on my PC hard drive to burn onto CD, can have quite a variety of music on one disc, Metallica, ACDC, Clash, Suzi Quatro, Rogue Traders, Deep Purple, yada, yada, yada.

Yeah, now its a speaker upgrade, amplifier and small sub to top it all off. ;o)
