Fraser Island is the area where we live and we frequent the island regularly.
There are plenty of tours that leave from Hervey Bay across to Fraser Island daily. You can choose from 1, 2 and 3 day tours. You will not be able to see all the Island on one of these tours as it is a huge island however you will see the main area's. You can also hire a 4WD and tour the island yourself. There are heaps of 4WD hire companies who hire out 4WD's specifically for that purpose. HOWEVER unless you are really knowledgeable about driving on soft sand I would not recommend it as Fraser Island has a lot of soft sand that has claimed many 4WD's over the years.
Check out a couple of these links for more details: http://www.fraserisland.au.com/ http://www.ozhorizons.com.au/qld/fc/fi.htm http://www.fraserislandadventuretours.com.au/ http://www.fraser-island-tour.com/ http://www.safari4wdhire.com.au/?gclid=CNDGu9H3o4YCFR8cGAodvSO4DQ http://www.peterpans.com/catalog/default.php http://www.oztravelbugs.com/loc.asp?iid=629DC307E3AB42E680D057CF3B6E3320
That should get you started. I am not sure how the prices compare with what you can buy it for in the UK so you will need to do your homework. I know from plenty of past experience when travelling to the USA that it is cheaper to book some things, like flights and car rental, before leaving Australia and other things, such as accommodation and tours, are cheaper to book inside the USA.
The only sad part is that you will never see the "Best" parts of Fraser Island, which is the North West Remote coast area, as no tours or 4WD's are permitted there. The only way to access it is by boat and that is what we do!!
I hope you enjoy your holiday here. We will also be sailing to Fraser Island in the first week of October so, if you can get up to Wathumba Creek, perhaps we may see you there?

Barnsey - 22 Jul 2006 03:11 GMT Sorry. Bad news
Fraser Is has been closed off. Only Australian citizens are allowed there now.
And you have to have a proper 4WD and at least 3 cartons of 4X in your esky, or else they wont let you on the barge.

Unless you start with 3 cartons of XXXX and a carton of Bundy and Cola and expect to get to the Island with only 3 cartons of XXXX.

How could you say that? Seriously. Call yourself an Aussie?
NO self respecting Aussie would EVER head off to Fraser Island with ONLY 3 cartons of 4X in the esky, unless they were only going for a day trip!!
I think the rule of thumb is 3 cartons per day, per person whilst on the Island!!!
Pommies can get on the island but I think they have to make a sacrificial donation of a couple of cartons to the barge captain. Then they will take them across!!

Rocatanski - 23 Jul 2006 10:37 GMT Why 4X, why not take real beer.

You're right, Fraser Island is in Queensland. Doesn't mean XXXX should qualify you as an Aussie citizen though! If it's got to be a QLD beer for Island access, why not Eumundi? :-)
XXXX has to be right down there with Fosters!!!

In fact it's so clever i think a Queenslander must have invented VB.
"Varmit Bait". Left in the appropriate places, i.e.The back of refigerators and at the very bottom of eskies at parties, kills all forms of cockroaches, mexicans and blow-ins. --

Rocatanski - 24 Jul 2006 22:33 GMT So what Jack Daniel's is in the U S A but I still drink that as well as Bundy, Coopers and Boags from Tassie. It's a narrow mind that does not past it own fence.

Usually it only cost's me about $1 to cover the 100km distance from Bundaberg to Wathumba Creek on Fraser Island, and that is usually due to running the diesel motor to get out of the marina and then running it again to get into Wathumba Creek!!
No park fee's, no camping permits, no taxes, no other park fee's!!!
Its the perfect holiday getaway machine!!!!!!

Barnsey - 25 Jul 2006 04:35 GMT Look at the wealth of info we've given our pommy visitor LOL!
Perhaps we should mention that drinking warm beer is a capital offence.
Rocatanski - 25 Jul 2006 06:18 GMT That goes without saying, the fact that you thought about it may put you at risk of being deported.

Garry Beattie - 30 Jul 2006 06:38 GMT > but isn't that the point of sailing > no wind? well, you are on holidays > > Kev Very true Kev, but possibly something a bit more accurate would be that when you are sailing you should never be in a hurry to get anywhere.
Unlike driving, the most relaxing part of a sailing holiday is the journey!!!
Best regards
