Land Cruiser Vs Land Cruiser

Garry Beattie - 16 Aug 2006 01:29 GMT Hi Guys.
Now that they have just announced the new Gas subsidy I decided to go have another look around for a 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser, this time though I am looking at petrol models and convert it over to gas.
They certainly have dropped in price from a couple of months ago so now may be a good time to buy.
I have found two locally that I like but I still think they may be a little overpriced for what they are.
Any comments re pros or cons about the following.
1998 GXV V8 Petrol. 150k good condition, bull bar, side steps, towbar etc. $29,000
2000 GXL 6Cyl Petrol. 134k Excellent condition. side steps and towbar but no bull bar. $27,000
The 2000 model is very nice but I like the interior of the 1998 model. It has a few extra's.
The V8 does worry me though. Anyone know what the consumption figures are for either? I know the TD model gets around 9L per 100kms but they are almost impossible to find.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Best regards
Garry

Garry Beattie - 17 Aug 2006 17:08 GMT Oh well. I settled it once and for all yesterday.
I have gone with the 2000 model GXL 6cyl.
$17,000 changeover with the Prado as a trade. I still think the price was a little high but the vehicle is in very good condition and appears to have been well looked after.
It is now booked in for gas conversion on November 6 so hopefully everything should be fine after that.

Just kidding, enjoy your new purchase and let us all know how the conversion goes eh. Its an issue that we will all be keen to hear about.

I pick it up later today after the fitting of the bull bar and the electronic Anti Rust anodes.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to build another false floor and storage area for it, but still being able to incorporate the back row of seats!!
I don't think it will be possible some how.

I just took delivery of it so now I going for a drive!!!!
Garry
PS Did you get the last photo's I sent to you re the false floor and storage in the Prado?

They seem to know what causes the rust to occur these days and so hopefully the brainiacs have worked out how to counteract it.
They have given me a 5 year warranty for the car so if any rust starts to appear they will fix it.

Now.... where were those rocks down at Rainbow Beach again?????

[quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > > Garry Yeah the Couplertec one was guaranteed for 10 years, but nicks in paint etc won't be protected, and the underbody isn't painted so you still really need to use a chem solution for that. You also need to have it inspected once a year to check it's working. The anode type apparently assist near the anodes but not over the whole car? I dunno... there's a lot of info out there and hard to work out which is bs and which isn't.
Perusal
Garry Beattie - 20 Aug 2006 23:48 GMT > Yeah the Couplertec one was guaranteed for 10 years, but nicks in paint > etc [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Perusal True. With regards to the annodes though, they said they normally fit 2 annodes, but because the Landcruiser is so big they wanted to fit 3 to it.
So your comments on the Annodes sond pretty well correct. Either that or it is an even better con to sell 3 annodes instead of 2!!

Classic snake oil.
The combination of pseudo-science, vague claims and "Technical certification" all point to something that is probably about as effective as a magnetic fuel conditioner.
For $50 less than whatever you paid for this bit of black magic, I will attach a piece of my 'magic tape' to any new vehicle and guarantee that it won't rust through inside five years, provided the paint surface is not damaged. (That's what this mob offer.)
Of their 'certification' authorities, the ones that I can identify do not certify the efficacy of the product. Patent Office only tests originality of the claims made. The others certify the electrical safety etc of the product.
Sorry, you've been had.
Can I interest you in a sabre-tooth tiger repellant?

(That's what this mob offer.) Sorry, but your black tape does not have 3 little LED lights on it, 2 of which flash!! So it would not look as impressive!!!
> Sorry, you've been had. > Moike Maybe, but time will tell I guess!!!
If I have been had, then there are a heck of a lot of other people being taken as well as they seem to do a very good trade selling these items.

Yes, you wouldn't have surf lifesaving clubs and mining co's spending $$ on them either.

They looked good except that you shouldve carpeted the insides of the draw ends and side peices to make it look professional. Do you have any contact adhesive like griptight or anything? Or at least an air powered staple gun anyway. Sorry am being finicky as I used to do that sh.t for a living and like to see it done right.
Scotty

[quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > Scotty I know what your saying as I thought the same thing myself. I did use my air staple gun to stick the carpet down, with contact adhesive underneath it. I was going to complete the insides with either black paint or carpet but did not get around to it.
The Prado is now gone and I guess that will be the next owners problem to finish it completely.
The Landcruiser is very nice to drive.

Kev - 16 Aug 2006 11:30 GMT > Hi Guys. > [quoted text clipped - 28 lines] > > Garry the couple of people I know with V8 100s say they get around 800klms from the two tanks(140L approx) and some say the very best they got was just on 900klms so you could guess that 800 would be the very best you'll get on gas
also you have to factor in the rise in LPG prices and fitting costs that will be inevitable because of this subsidy
over $25,000 for anything older than 6 years is a bit too much for petrol models, I've seen the 6cyl GXLs going for under $20,000 you should be able to get at least 2004 model for around $30,000-$33,000 I don't know when the 5 speed auto was introduced but it may have been around then
but do look around a bit more because those prices seem too high
Kev

I have noticed some 98 models on Car Point for as low as $17,000 but the majority of 2000 models seem to be up around the $25,000 to $30,000.
Garry
Kev - 16 Aug 2006 13:03 GMT >>the couple of people I know with V8 100s say they get around 800klms from >>the two tanks(140L approx) [quoted text clipped - 20 lines] > > Garry there wasn't much of a change between 98 till about 2004 they introduced the V8 and that's about it then the next model came with a change in the 75 series as well and they dropped the 4.5L six in the wagons, and introduced the 5 speed auto in I think 2005 and changed the interior about the only difference visibly was the tail lights had clear indicators the last change was early this year, noticeable by the clear headlight lenses, headlights no longer stacked vertically and LED rear tail/brake and indicators(indicators moved to the top with reverse now in between them and stop/tail) and the real chrome "V8" or "TDI" badges on the tailgate
I'd be looking for at least the second update model and possibly a 5 speed auto
with the way petrol prices are going and the scare mongering going on about the dangers of LPG, hang out for another 6 months, you may see prices drop a lot further, and look a bit further than up your way Brisbane isn't that far to travel to save a couple of thousand $$$
Kev

Kev
Garry Beattie - 16 Aug 2006 16:53 GMT > And no I'm not a 100 series nut > a mate of mine is > he can't get enough info on them > he not long ago bought the new turbo diesel > > Kev Yeah. The TD is still the way I would prefer to go but there are not that many of them around and they are still fetching quite good $$.
I know we almost bought one 6 months ago for $25,000 (98 model, 250k) but quite a few people told me it was overpriced and so I backed away from it.
I am not sure if I did the right thing or not, now!!
As far as travelling, I would not rule out driving to Sydney or Melbourne to pick one up provided the quality was there and the price was worth the hassle.
Best regards
Garry
Rocatanski - 16 Aug 2006 22:38 GMT I have a 2000 TD and it is the best Cruiser I have owned, when I purchased it in 2003 they were as scarce as rocking horse sh.t,.but a mate got one a 2004 from the SO.A. Gov auctions earlier this year and there seemed to be a fair few around, it was a manual, winch bar side steps etc for $45,000.
