I'm looking into buying a portable fridge/ freezer, 50-60 Litres.
I'm not really interested in a 3 way, only 12V / 240 V
although  12 V only would be OK too.

Waeco are popular. I've looked at Eva Kool .
Does anyone have any experience with Eva Kool. They make a yellow Poly one
which looks reasonably robust.
Any opinions on 12 V portable  fridges appreciated .

All 3 are good reliable fridges, with good compressors and insulation.

Engel:
Pros - Solidly built. Tough canvas travel bag.
Cons - Don't make a 50L size.  40L is a bit too small.  60L is heavy and
pricey.  Basic electrics (though the 40L anniversary model has a temp
readout).  Probably not the best choice if you want to use it regularly in a
boat as the steel case may rust.

Waeco:
Pros - Reasonably priced. Includes battery protection circuit, temperature
readout and inside lighting.  Separate 'dairy section'.  50L is a good size
for the price.
Cons - Lid hinge arrangement is not very robust.  Travel bag (nylon) not as
good as the Engel's (top vecroed flaps are a bit of a pain).  60L size not a
very useful shape (too tall).

Evakool:
Pros - Robust.  Separate fridge and freezer sections.
Cons - Basic electrics. Won't win any fashion awards (tacked on compressor
unit looks a bit cheesy, and as for the yellow colour - urgh!).

Repco currently have a 50L fridge on special for $700.  Looks OK, but don't
know anything about them.  May be worth investigating.

Did a google and found a pic of the 50L one here:
http://www.repcoshop.com.au/ASP/Catalogue/CatPage16.asp
Brand is "Downunder".  Seems to be a good thing - dual compartments, Danfoss
compressor, low voltage protection.  The Repco catalogue that came in the
mail last week had it shown at $699.  Tempted to get one myself.

I checked out the ones at Repco.
The ones shown in the catalogue for $899 and $1099 are "Downunder" which is
also EvaKool.
They are Fibreglass construction and looked OK.
The one they had for $799  is a Scorpion brand , no doubt made in China.
It was basically all plastic. I think the Downunder one for another $100
would be better value,  has the same warranty as EvaKool and is made in Qld.

I may still go for the EvaKool Poly one, the colour doesn't worry me.
Its looks a bit agricultural but seems funtional and practical and very
robust.
The hinges are solid and has rubber straps to secure the lid closed, no
flimsy catches to break.
From all reports the Eva Kool ice boxes with a similar construction have
very good insulation properties.

Thanks for the input.

Hi.. I have the 73 litre autofridge, and it pisses on all the others.

It is set up in the back of me troopy with an ed6 deep cycle battery ,
plasmatronics regulator and an 80watt solar panel. Once cooled down it only
runs for two hours in the morning and two hours at night the other 20 hours
it is switched off. And that is opening and getting sh.t out of it 4 to 8
time s a day. It holds 0 degree all day and night even in 40 degree days.
The two panels on either side need to be kept clear. Usage is 16 amp hours
per day. I have on many occasion jump started other 4wd's whose batteries
have gone flat especially engel fridges. I cannot fault this fridge.

Look at any ocean going boats and yachts, 90% have an Autofridge, must say
something for quality, reliability and performance. I've had mine for 7
years and it has not missed a beat.

I have an Evakool RF47 and could not be happier.
It is now the 2nd Evakool I have owned and I find them to be a great little
fridge / freezer. (The first one I sold with my old boat.)

When I was ready to buy my 2nd one I really shopped around and looked for
alternatives. The only others I found were Waeco and Engell.

I did not go with a Waeco because they are a much smaller fridge and have
very thin insulation in the walls. Check the sizes out yourself. Compare a
50L Waeco next to a 50L Engell or Evakool (or similar size) and you will
notice that the Waeco is much smaller inside. I don't know how they get
their measurements but they are not the same as the other fridges.

I did not go with Engell (although it was a very close decision) because
Engel is made of tin and would eventually start to rust, especially in a
marine environment.

We decided to go again with the Evakool. The walls are thick for great
insulation.
I like the separate freezer compartment too and it seems to be very
economical on battery power in the boat.

One thing I did not like at first was that the motor sits on the side of the
fridge rather than inside. It looks a little tacky.
I have since found out why they do this. With the motor placed on the side
of the fridge it allows for flow through ventilation from 3 sides. Also as
the motor heats up when being used, if it is positioned inside the case of
the fridge it actually heats up the bottom of the fridge causing the fridge
to run more often to compensate the extra heat. When the motor is placed on
the side of the fridge this does not happen.

Choice magazine did a comparison test about 18 months ago on portable
fridges and Evakool came out tops in those test's too. I think Engell was
2nd. I am not sure where Waeco came.

I am not trying to endorse Evakool, but I have had 2 now and have been very
happy with both.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for that info.
I have pretty much decided on the EvaKool.
You've given me more confidence in my decision.

No worries Richard!!

Let us know what size you get and if you are happy with it or not.

Just been up bush for 9 days with our Evacool. A fellow that came with us
had a brand new Waeco - it behaved poorly and by the end of the trip it was
not working at all! Back to the dealer for a warranty job I think.
Son borrowed a Waeco from a mate and they couldnt keep the beers cold (not
sure how many they were drinking tho)
We love our Evacool - incidently the motor is internal and we usually run it
as a freezer, take out the evening frozen meat and a brick each day which
keeps the milk/margarine/cheese cool and around 3pm throw in a few drinks to
cool down and with the aid of our 80 watt solar panel we can stay sitting in
the one spot for 4 days before it is time to charge up the second battery.
We turn it off at night - so far so good. After having it for almost 3 yrs
and gone over some really rough and corrugated roads I would definitely
recommend a Evacool. (BTW on the latest trip it froze a heap of good size
barra and quality fish as well! Just thought I would add that comment :)

What size is it Kathy?

We have an RF47 which is an ideal compromise for both car and boat.

I love it too. It is a great fridge.

Ours is a ED68 and it doesnt look orange to me nor does it have its motor
"outside" Nice looking thing, all white (well atm it is still in the back of
the Hilux looking pretty dusty!
We use it as a fridge if only out a few days but on a long trip we freeze.
Not a complaint about it yet. Incidently we took a generator which we ran on
the 4th day to recharge battery and run the fridge that day. The Jackaroo
driver had a Waeco - he "borrowed" our generator most days in an effort to
get some cool into it. He had paid out $$ for a duel battery system, but it
just couldnt start up the fridge. He rang today to say the dealer told him
the fridge had "malfunctioned" something in the computer.

I used my new yellow EvaKool on the weekend.
Worked a treat. The beer stayed just right .
I "acquired " a 100AH sealed battery and the fridge has been running off it
since Saturday (60 hours)
I'm monitoring the battery voltage and at this rate expect to get at least 3
days out of the battery without recharging.
I fitted a small digital thermometer ($30 from Dick Smith ) with the sensor
inside so I can relate the dial setting to temperature (didn't want to risk
freezing the beer)
The real test will be when I take the minister for employment and finance
away and she wants milk for her tea, frozen meat and chilled wine

Happy camper

I'm sure you can have failures with every brand.  I have a Waeco CF50
which is now around 5 years old.  When I got mine, I turned it up
because I didn't think it would get very cold.  I ended up with 4 litres
of frozen coke overnight.  :-)

I also had one occasion when it wouldn't keep anything cold.  The day
after I got back, after a 300 km return trip, the battery in my car died
completely
