Do rangers sometimes give out wrong information?

We have just returned from a great 9 days up on the Cape. Called into a
ranger station on Lakefield only to be told we would definitely not be able
to get into Bathurst Bay - we would require a winch within the first 7
kms!!!!!!!! there were several creek crossings with water over the
bonnet!!!!!!! we would never get a bush trailer out there etc etc etc. So
the next day we thought we would set off and just have a look at these so
called non traversable creeks. There were 4  vehicles in the group and a
Jackaroo (LOL). The creeks were deep, but absolutely no problem. You just
had to walk them first and plan your attack. Yes, there were some dried out
bog holes, some wet bog holes but all had firm bases under them, and a lot
of sand but we had absolutely no problems (except the ummm Junkaroo wich was
pulled along more than it drove, or maybe that was the driver? ) At the
beginning of the trip the said Jackaroo owner was sprouting how he hated
Toyotas, but after being pulled along for a week he went home stating that
he was going to buy one, but still wouldnt admit defeat.
On the way out, we found a total idiot stuck in one of the creeks in a 720
Nissan, with a normal boat trailer on the back, and after pulling it out
(yep he did have his father in law with him in another "vehicle" but he was
too busy drinking! sheessssh) he drove 50 mts up the road and in the first
decent patch of sand he went down again! We left them to it with adice to
turn around before they would be stuck there forever LOL. Did the ranger lie
to us incase we were total idiots too? Or was he just not in the know? Are
they told to discorage people from going to remote areas? Needless to say
their poor advice almost caused us to change plans which would have spoilt a
great time away.

Kathy I'm pleased you had a great time.
Try putting yourself in the rangers position. You have a swag of idiots
wandering around your patch. On many occasions you have probably been called
out to help them...or worse.  Another mob...yours...arrives and asks how's
the track? What would you tell them ?  Rangers are human too :))

Sounds like fun Kathy...........<envy>

I'm heading up the Gulf next week end to see about a job at a mine north of
the Lynd. Might have to drop in my "secret location" since I'm up that way.

Strange seasons this year, eh?  We went camping last week end at
Rollingstone, and had to bail out on Saturday night. Ingham had it's biggest
rain for Sept on record..........133 ml!! The Bruce highway was cut off last
night.

Is the Tablelands and the Cape getting this rain?

Yep........I reckon the rangers would be confused by this weather too.

We had a load of rain on the way home around Laura which had the road pretty
muddy (yeeehaa mud on the roof again!). Tablelands have had rain, but not
like the Ingham area. We are riding our pushbikes to Cooktown next week
(330kms) over 3 days, so hopefully there has been enough rain to put some
water in the creeks )

Their information about the road conditions may have also been anything from
a week to a fortnight old...

Hi Barnsey! Did you camp at Rollingstone or Balgal Beach? I am friends
with the excop from Paluma (Police station moved to Rollingstone and he
moved a year or so later) We had a few good camping trips to Balgal Beach
with him and his family. Nice spot!
Cheers,
Paul.

There's a VERY nice caravan park about 10 Ks north of
Rollingstone.........although I object to the idea of camping anywhere near
a light bulb, with kids, it's great. We set up camp, and they buggar off,
swim in the pool, play on the beach, make "friends", etc and leave Mrs
Barnsey and me in peace for hours.

My father in law is an ex copper too. Ask your mate if he remembers any
traffic cops in Townsville known as "the 3 amigos"  First name Bill. More
than likely, he'd know him.

Barnsey,
Sorry for the delayed reply. The Mrs and me took a week off and went to
Sydney.
I went down for the first time in 20 yrs last year, for the footy finals....
Go Them 'Boys!! (Next year) Anyway, I said to the Mrs that it was a pity she
wasn't there so we decided to go this year. We both had a nice time but I
can
see it being another 20 yrs before I go back..... unless the 'boys do well
again...
But I'm back now. Next time I talk to my mate, (he's in Brisbane now...
still a cop) I'll mention the 3 amigos. and Ill let you know the response.
Cheers,
Paul
