Excuse my ignorance of this subject, but is there a difference between HF
land and HF marine radio's or are they all on the same frequency?

I know, with VHF, there is a difference.

Different frequencies, plus marine radios generally have some sort of
protection/preparation for living in an environment hostile to
electronic life. Sadly the "protection/preparation" starts at doing no
more than painting them white and charging more, and stops not too far
distant from that point with only a few notable exceptions.

Actually I was told something similar once by a tech. He said the main
difference between a normal unit and a marine unit is that the marine unit
has had its internal electronics sprayed with a silicon sealing spray to
help prevent salt corrosion, and charge quite a bit more for them.

In my boat I have just bought the standard equipment without any problems.
My DVD still works fine, as does the CD stereo.

Broadly speaking , HF frequencies are allocated by the ACMA depending upon
the class of service. So there are different frequencies for the Amateur
service, that Marine service and Land Mobile services. All of these services
have their own differences which tend to be both technical and operational.

Thanks for that Jim.

So if I want to have a HF radio on my boat it will not be able to double as
a ham radio if I get my ham licence???

Basically you can use a suitable radio on either ham or marine
ham shouldn't be used on marine unless a real emergency , but some
marine get used on ham ..

Yes and no :) There are marine comms facilities availiable that aren't
usually incorporated in amateur sets (although they have lots of other
goodies).
However if you just want voice then yes. If you want to be able to send a
distress call and have it acted upon by Canberra I suggest you do a bit of
Googling around before you buy.
A commercial marine set is often of limited use on ham bands due to
different requirements of the two services. They can be used, but are not as
flexible as an amateur set.
