First thing Saturday morning........(5.30 ish) I'm heading off to the Gulf
to visit a mine, about 100Ks past Greenvale.

Outback road trip by myself!  But I have to be back for work on Sunday
night, so it won't be much of a break.

Still.........the open road, wide open spaces. Cant wait!

I just thought I'd tell you all, since this newsgroup is so dull lately.

100kms past Greenvale is "The Gulf" Barnsey?

Navigation and Geography not your strong point then?

Best take a HF radio, an EPIRB and rations to last the week it's going
to take emergency services to find you. :-)

Bastard!

Technically, the are is known as "Goldfields and Upper Flinders"  The Gulf
Country" is west of Georgetown I suppose, but never mind. It's still the
outback, and that's where I'm going.

Don't bother with a Globalstar sat phone. You'd have to take food for 6
months !

I'll carve my initials in a tree where I die.

In 100 years, it will be a sacred site.

Hope you pick up a job out there.
And you're right. I think they're all out trying their tyre deflators on the
beach :))

Forget the EPIRB!!! LOLOLOL I dont think Barnsey is going really remote as
all that! They had storms out there a couple of nights ago Barnsey - should
be nice and hot for you.
I am still here - off to a big gig at the Casino in Cairns this weekend,
going to tow the camper down and get a cheapo night! Be stuffed if we are
going to pay $150 for a night when we can house at a van park for $24!!!!!
Tis only a bed to get over the hungover after all :P
Have a great weekend
Kathy.

Trip report:

(I posted this on OL, couldn't be bothered retelling the story, so I've cut
and pasted it here).

Left home at 6.30 Saturday morning, got to the mine at about 1030. Nice
outback drive. Met Andrew at the site office and did a short visitors
induction with the OH&S bloke. For the next 4 hours, Andrew and me drove
around the mine site.

There were numerous times where I was speechless. If anyone gets the
opportunity to visit a mine, jump at it! Some of the things I saw just blew
me away. The size of the machinery, the open cut mine.........

The biggest rush was when we went underground. I wasn't sure how I was going
to handle being underground, to be honest. But I was fine. What a hoot!
Andrew trashed the hell out of the Cruiser ute we were in. Don't EVER buy an
ex mine 4wd! Fark they get a hiding!

Yes, this is definitely what i want to do. I loved it. The blokes I met were
all really friendly and easy going. It seems like such a pleasant workplace.
............compared to Qld Health anyway

It was great talking to the OH&S bloke. He gave me some very good advice on
getting a start in the mining industry. He's going to talk to his boss about
me, ring me tomorrow arvo............there's a fair chance that I might get
a job. The company is expanding and opening new mines in the area, so
they're looking for staff. Fingers crossed.

So I left the mine on a bit of a high.............Since I was up that way, I
decided I'd visit my favourite pub, about 70ks further west in Einasliegh

What a messy night!

Of course I was sooooo happy to have to drive 4 hours home (with a nasty
hangover) on Sunday and go back on night shift. .

But fark, what a great trip!

I had a ball!

A big thankyou to Andrew for organising the visit to the mine and showing me
around

It was fantastic.
Garry Beattie - 11 Nov 2006 21:39 GMT

YES!!

I have to do a 11 day paramedics course first though. I have to go to Cairns
in Jan.......(I HATE Cairns!!!)

As soon as I've done the course, medical and induction courses, I'll be
starting as a casual, working 7 day fly in fly out blocks. ($400 a day)

I'll be permanent by June / July........as long as I don't fark anything up.

Very happy........apart from having to go to Cairns

Can you recommend any cheap accommodation in Cairns Kathy? I'm doing a
course in Jan 07. I don't want to pay 11 days at $100 a night. I'd like to
avoid back packers hostels too.

Another alternative is staying with my wife's relatives in Innisfail, and
commuting.
just us - 12 Nov 2006 05:41 GMT
Dont commute - it will take you at least an hour and half each way as from
Gordonvale to Cairns is just the pits - slow traffic most of the day.
You could stay at the
http://www.sunlandcaraparkinn.com.au/flash_budgetcabins.htm for around $300
per week but lock your door at night!
The http://www.coconut.com.au/cabins.php is a much nicer park but it depends
on what you want. Both are fairly well located in the Cairns area.
Surely if the mine is getting you to do the course they are reimbursing you
the cost of accomodation? Pretty lousy buggers if they are not going to. I
really dont know of any cheap accom in Cairns, the backpackers have taken it
over. Is that Kagara Zinc??? If it is, look out for myself and another
cyclist in April LOL we are gonna ride from Rocky home via the inland route.
Have been told the Kagara Zinc trucks will give us a hard time. Did you sell
your camper? Maybe you could take the camper up there and use that!
Good luck
Kathy.

When we lived in Innisfail and had to go to Cairns for a weekend stay we
usually stayed at the Coconut Van Park, in their cabins, and it was very
nice.

Either there or Club Crocodile over north side.

Yes, Mrs B looked up Coconuts last night. It looks like the go We are Big 4
members so we'll get a 10% discount. We've decided that we'll all (7 of us)
go up on the 15th and Mr B and the kids can do the tourist sh.t, while I'm
doing the course. They'll stay for 5-7 days. I think we'll book a cabin. We
sold the camper trailer 3-4 months ago

It would be nice if they did. The course is costing me $1800, so it's going
to be an expensive few weeks. But without experience, you have to do these
things if you want a job in the mines. I've deferred the OH&S degree I was
doing through CQU (Rockhampton) which is twenty times more expensive. I
found out on my trip to the mine that the degree wouldn't be much use to
anyone without industry experience anyway.

Yes. Kagara. I'll be at both Surveyor and Chillagoe to start with. Hopefully
I'll be permanent at Surveyor. Nice and handy to Einasliegh.

Bloody hell! That will be an interesting trip!

Thanks Kathy.

BZZZZZT!

Just got an Email from them quoting $1400.

Plan B, I think.

I think it used to cost us about $140 per night for their deluxe cabin.

I remember thinking that they certainly were not cheap, but the park is very
nice.

Booked in at the Crystal Cascades. 2 cabins, 5 kids and 2 adults 16th to
22nd then 1 adult (me on my lonesome)  22nd - 27th all for $950. Looks OK on
the web page.

I'm going to need a holiday after this! The course is from 7.30 to 5.30 11
days in a row!
