barnsey,

I finally got over to see the neighbour Saturday, and picked up the HF radio.

I'll take some pics of it tonight, and send them to you, if you can shoot me an
email address.  It looks to be in good nick.

There seems to be about channels pre-programmed into it, although i suspect you
will have to get these changed.  Can anyone tell me what the RFDS contact
channels are, and I will see what ones are already programmed in.

Sorry it's taken so long;l been a bit side-tracked with other stuff.

If all goes well, I can probably send it to you tomorrow (Wednesday 22nd Nov).
However, dont stress if this doesnt suit; I'll be bound to be going to town a
few more times the next week or so.

Cheers,

For $300 You can get an Autotune box that goes inline between the radio
and antenna
then you can use just one of those cheap Heavy duty 27MHz antennas
this does a few things
saves money on a proper Codan autotuner and
if some scum steals the antanna, a replacement is only $20 not $800
and is less likely that someone will break into the car and steal the
radio if they don't realise it's there

Kev, I have yet to see a new one for $300. They have their problems, least
of all not radiating as well as etc. One of my customers threw one at me
that had failed between Well 33 and Wiluna. Some of those things appear to
be somewhat skimpy on design when it comes to corros and bulldust.
The real difference between the two is that the autotune is a genuine 1/4
wave radiator .
Those atu's go between tx and a non resonant whip, but unless you mount them
directly to the whip, you start to introduce losses. All you're doing is
matching a non resonant whip. Doesnt the autotune do that also ? Yes, but in
its case the matching components also radiate which isnt the case with an
auto matching network.
Or something like that :))

Hey Jim, how good are the hand held HF radio's? How do they stack up against
a fixed mount?

I never knew you could get them.

Best regards

Gary, some of them are pretty good, some are toys. Generally you get what
you pay for. You need a mobile charger for em in the bush. Great for helping
the missus back onto a tow hook on a trailer, or a couple of cheapies if you
have kids wandering around.

What about calling for help like with RFDS? Are we talking genuine HF
radio's or just 27meg radio's??

Sorry mate, just re read your question (ah duh Jim).
Hand held HF's ? Not sure if you're referring to UHF Cb's or the HF I hire ?

Barnsey,

In case my email didnt make it through, although I think we have finaly resolved
the email problems:

Radio left today; boxed in with enough bubblewrap & foam to protect it dropping
from a few miles high (hopefully enough to cope with Aust Post...).  Should make
it to your neck of the woods Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Also threw in a little jar of Emu Apple Jelly; bloody good stuff with roast
meat, or on toast.  We seem to have a few dozen jars of the stuff at present.

Cheers,

Yes, I got your Email 3 times Rod...........LOL! I think Telstra is having a
good day, or the crows must be sitting on a different power line.......

Thanks again for all this. You are cordially invited to Townsville to
demolish some of my home brew cordial.

Seriously, next time you're up this way, or if there's anything you need
posted from here, let me know.

I'll Email you to let you know hen the package arrives.

I doubt whether I'll hook the unit up until after Xmas. I've just forked out
$3k for the paramedics course I'm doing in Cairns..........and Xmas$ is
looming .......so I probably wont be able to buy an aerial etc, for a few
months.

Such is life.

Cheers.

G'day Rod.

The radio arrived last night. Odd that Aust Post deliver on Sunday
nights.......

Everything is intact, including the jelly. My kids wanted to know if it is
REALLY made from wild emus. VERY nice.

The radio. It's big! I'm fairly sure I used one of these when I was in Mt
Isa.and got sent to  places like Dajarra and Julia Creek. They had them in
the ambulances and as base stations, if I recall. I'm not sure where it will
fit in the Patrol. It will be after Xmas before I can spare the money to
hook it up, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyway, as I said before, if there's anything you need posted from
Townsville, or any way I can repay the favour, please don't hesitate to let
me know.

Cheers.
