The specs say 127kW and 410NM. That brings their diesel up to date with the
Pathfinder, on paper at least, but still lacks against other like-minded
4x4s.
The test drive was pretty much as expected. Same old Prado in every other
respect, but with a new and more powerful common-rail diesel. On my test
drive road-circuit, it was impossible to guage just how much of a difference
this new engine will make to the driving experience... presumably it will
make a difference off-road.
My first impression, as I pulled out of the dealership, was that it's engine
was a little noisier than the previous diesel. Of course, this was entirely
subjective, and I would have liked to have test driven an older diesel just
to check, but they had no old diesels on the yard - sold out! The salesman
quickly interjected, explaining that this new common-rail diesel ought to be
quieter than the previous diesel. That left me wondering if Toyota have
skimped on noise-deadening material between the engine-bay and the cabin?
That would be a typical cost-saving trade-off of a manufacturer. Then
again, it may have just been my imagination.
The other thing that surprised me was that the new diesel commands an
additional $2,600! Ouch! I was expecting a small price hike, but $2,600
sounds like robbery. I'm hoping this price hike is just for the
early-adopters (who just gotta have it at any price). I'm not an early
adopter, but timing is such that I would like to replace my vehicle in the
not too distant future. Maybe Toyota pricing is more reasonable after the
early-adopter period is over?

Interesting, cause we have 2 older (90/95 series) Prados in the
(extended) family and both aren't the quietist things but when I test
drove a recent (not the new one) Diesel I thought it was even noisier
than those and rough as guts at idle. As an auto it was so slow off the
mark I decided I couldn't live with it in the city where it's going to
be used 90-95% of it's life, and bought a petrol. I'm happy to wear the
extra fuel (but less servicing).

2,600 over what? RRP? They were advertising them recently as $47K drive
away, but RRP's (+ on roads) a way lot more than that.

The new TD auto is also no cheetah. For city driving, I would say that it
is adequate for a TD. I can't compare it with the Petrol variant.

That was the RRP and as I wasn't at the point of haggling, I realise the
prices are fictitious. The breakdown that I have on paper is:
Dealer Delivery: $1,540.91
Prado 3.0 TD Auto GXL (2007 spec): $52,270.71 (includes $272.73 for
metallic paint)
Rego Fee: $264.35
GST: $308.80
Luxury Car Tax: $111.09
----------------------------
TOTAL: $59,300.02
(It might be interesting to learn what prices others are seeing.)
There's an awful lot of room between $47K and $59K, even when accounting for
the new engine price hike. Also, I am told that the old diesel powered
Prados were being sold off with >$5K discounts during Oct. Though even that
doesn't account for the $12K difference here.
Cheers,
LFaR.

What?
No state stamp duty?

At what point does luxury tax creep in?

$57,009, I believe. Though, I'm no expert either.
