Ever tried pulling a caravan through a steep creek bed ?
Ever seen what happens to caravans on rough roads ?

It's horses for courses naturally, you go for what suits you. Mind you some
of the new "Super Trailers" seem to have all the tough parts with nearly
caravan type appointments but then comes payment time and the dream stops
:-)

I understand where you're coming from. Just a tent on wheels ...sort of.
A tent with a stand up kitchen, and a bed you don't have to roll down onto
and off of. A trailer that will hold half the stuff you put in the back of
the truck. A bed that you dont have to worry about stony country...or mud so
much.
Yep, tent on wheels but some tent .

bed you don,t roll down onto or off like a stretcher???? wich you don,t need
a ladder to get on or of like some camper trailers
was not suggesting not to use a trailer to carry tent in then when you set
up camp you can collect wood for your fire with the trailer! So you set up
camp in swamps or in the middle of quarrys ?FUN

It's obvious that you've never done much camping in Australia's remote
areas. (this is a 4wd group !)
Nor do you appear to take into account the different physical capabilities
that our camping and touring population have.
So what are you firing at ?
Surely one of the facts of camping or touring is that everyone has their own
ideas on how they want to travel and camp.
I've slept under newspaper on a train station, camped in five star hotels,
in a three man tent on Cape York over summer, suffered stone bruises in the
western deserts, camped in the car for 3 days and nights during rains, yadda
yadda yadda.
I've also camped in campgrounds where others had virtually brought their
houses along to *camp*.
I've seen tents and swags and utes camped next to $100K+ rigs that wanted
for little.
I don't care if you have a tent or a swag or a caravan or c/t . .
So what was the  post about again ? :))))))))
Biggus - 30 Nov 2006 04:59 GMT
I've seen this one too recently in the Flinders, and makes you wonder
why the f.ck they leave home...

Regardless of all the other issues Id say the big one is the weight and
towing capabilities. WAAAAAAY easier to tow a camper trailer than a caravan,
even down to the wind resistance, lower centre of gravity, less wind sheer,
you can tow under cararks..... need I go on?

We just went through this process with the exact same question.

Options:
Pop Top:
Good point: Very comfy.
Bad point: Fuel economy while towing and ability to travel off road.

Jayco Camper:
Good point: All the comforts of a pop top (well almost) and can be towed,
within reason, off road.
Bad Point: Still very heavy for a camper trailer, so fuel would then become
a factor.

Camper trailer:
Good Point: Great to tow, light and easily taken off road. Better fuel
economy on long trips
Bad Point: More set up time and basic accommodation.

Tent:
Good Point: Easy to store. No extra fuel consumed and can be taken anywhere
the 4WD will go.
Bad Point: Constant setting up of tent, bedding, kitchen etc. Stopping over
night becomes a real pain. Packing up next morning would be a bigger pain.

We settled on a camper trailer because it was the overall best compromise
for us. The word compromise featured very heavy in our decision as we could
not find the perfect solution.

We are explorers, not campers. We may stop in one location for a couple of
days but usually it would only be a "one night stand" with, perhaps, lots of
K's between stops.

I think we made the right choice, but only time will tell.

I have seen some wonderful fully off road capable pop-tops. e.g. Trakmaster
http://www.trakmaster.com.au/cms/details.asp?NewsID=32
and
http://www.trakmaster.com.au/cms/details.asp?NewsID=55

no doubt there are others.

Very nice. We also looked at a couple of very nice off road pop tops.

The Jayco range looked very good, but at $53,000 were a bit pricey.

We looked at another brand, can't recall their name though, and they were
really good.

Good clearance, great suspension and only 1600kg. Reasonably priced at
$38,000 for an 18 footer.

But for the use it would have got I could not justify spending that much
money.

In our situation we already have a nice 28 foot yacht which we use quite a
bit.
We also have 2 weeks timeshare on the Gold Coast we use each year.
I also try and spend 6 weeks per year in the USA & Canada and we try and go
on a Pacific cruise each year for 2 weeks as well.
Even though we run our own business from home, with a daughter still in
school, we are limited to the amount of time we can actually get off to
school holidays.

Admittedly the 6 weeks in the USA is usually on my own, on business, But
with 2 weeks already accounted for on the Gold Coast, another 2 weeks on a
cruise and at least another 4 to 6 weeks on our own boat, the off road
camper would really only spend most of its life sitting in the garage. That
was why we opted for the camper trailer. At $7,000 it was not a huge cost,
but is now there for when we want to use it.

Perhaps we may go away more often on weekends now that we have it?
I love the idea of exploring and now we can always set off on a Saturday
morning and head west until we decide to stop, set up camp, and continue
exploring the next day on our way back home. A great weekend away!!

As my Wife tells me, Boys never grow up their toys just get more expensive.

Remember, growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

Naah, I still have bicycles, model trains, (although I did add garden
gauge and 5" live steam later) and a few other things like kites.

But, I am adding a camping trailer {:-) (to the chain saw, welder, ....)

Exactly. was it Billy Connolly (with Andrew Denton) who had a good speil

The more toys you have, the younger you feel and the longer you live (or you
die smiling!)

Wives never seem to understand this concept!!

The real problem is that they always see themselves as Toy number 1 for some
reason :))

But they wont let you have more than one of them will they!

Mind you you can always upgrade from Wife Version 1.0 to Girl freind 2.1,
you will have to accept that Girlfreind 2.1 overrides Wife 1.0 and theres no
going back to Wife 1.0 once your've fully loaded Girlfreind 2.1.

Yeah but you need to do a complete virus scan on Girlfriend 2.1, otherwise
they may crash your entire system and delete all of your financial files in
one hit.

I noticed that too.

And herein lies the problem. They see themselves as Toy #1, BUT don't ever
refer to them as that otherwise all hell will break loose!!

I guess that's why I prefer my dog.

It doesn't matter how late I come home, he is always happy to see me. In
fact, the later I stay out, the happier he seems to be when I come home!!
He loves it when all my mates come around to watch the footy.
He never asks me about the previous dogs I owned before him.
AND
He seems to understand the whole concept of Farting!!

No wonder they call them mans best friend!

I wasn't querying your choice. No doubt in your circumstances it is the
correct one.
You said in your mail that you doubted the ability of pop-tops to be able to
cope with full off road conditions. My point was that there are specially
built models like the Trakmasters that are quite off road capable.
Good luck with your camper.

Good question.

We had  camper trailer .........custom made from a 8 x 6 trailer, which cost
us about $3k. It spent 99% of it's life sitting doing nothing. It was great
when we actually used it, but we couldn't justify the asset not being used.

We sold it 4- months ago and used the money for other
purposes.........paying bills!  We now have a decent set of tents and
camping gear that fit in the back of the Patrol.

However, if you can afford $5 -$25k, I say go for it. We'll get another
camper trailer one day, when the house renovations are finished, the kids
have left home, the mortgage is paid.........etc.

you can.

There's nothing wrong with being old and grey. Sure, your body goes its own
way, but by then you often have enough dough to do what you want to do.
Met a 70yo who did marathons, a 68yo who bushwalked a lot of the year. Both
with high energy levels, and the experience of age.
Daughters friend is a travel agent who almost got fired for suggesting that
a hiking trek through Nepal wasn't suitable for a group of 65yolds. They
went straight to the owner !
If you look after yourself (I didn't :( and have reasonable genes there's no
reason why you can't be the oldest "cool cool" swinger in town.
A lot of outback travellers are over 65 these days. They not only know how
to go, but how to enjoy themselves.
So, just remember that 60 is the new 40 !
(God I hope so..cant wait  :))

Cheers

The previous replies answered your question, "Why buy a camper
trailer." But are you intending to take the camper trailer off road
and up & down river banks and through rivers & creek beds etc. If so
my mail concern would be the type of coupling to be used between
vehicle and trailer and the amount of road clearance under trailer.

Last time I went camping it pissed rain
and packing up a camp took 1 hour of getting soaked
we had a 3 man tent and table/cooker etc set up outside

if we had a capmer trailer everything could be packed up under the
shelter of the canopy and packed into the trailer instead of having to
carry it to the back of the wagon
and the last 5 mins for folding the camper up

the time taken would have been halved and the time spent in the rain
very minimal

I am looking at a pop/top camper as we have 5 people to accommodate and
every thing we need will be in the camper, no setting up anything other
than winding up the top and pulling the ends/beds out

5 mins and we are set
maybe another 5 mins to erect an awning for beer drinking in the shade
