Dry country, I love Mt. Mulligan, but loathe the creature who owns the
property. We have been put onto a very nice camping spot in from
Thornborough.
Take the Thornborough turnoff and about 2kms short of Tyrconnel there
is a 4 way intersection, turn left intot he hills, the road/track is
rough and not well marked but eventually (about .75km) you fetch up
where the old miners blasted a watercourse to join two small creeks,
the manin section is about 400m long, 30m wide and very, very deep. As
the creeks there have flowed recently, the water will be clean - alive
with fish too.
Other alternative, it is a little known but true fact that there is a
dam on the top of Mt Mulligan - it used to supply water for the mine.
The prick who owns the property has blown the stairs that used to lead
to it from the town side, but the pathway from the mine on the other
side was still there a couple of years back.

Map .... Mt Mulligan..... Qld
just us - 15 Dec 2006 21:36 GMT
Barnsey, if you look at your NQ map, just north of Dimbulah you will see Mt
Mulligan.
Thanks Blue Heeler -
We have spent a lot of time around Mt Mulligan. Have climbed Mt McGann, the
mountain on the eastern side of Mt Mulligan. 5 years ago we spent 10 days
hiking on top of Mulligan during the wet season - WOW. It is a most
incredible place with aboriginal etchings in the escarpments, there are
"sacred lakes" which are massive waterholes great for swimming on a hot day.
There are also huge underground waterways, scarey to get into but absolutely
amazing to swim in :). We camped a couple of days beside the old man made
dam on top - very pretty area and will always be regarded as one of the
hardest 10 day walks we have done. The fellow who owns Mt Mulligan station
has never been a problem for us. In fact the other day when I rang to ask if
we could come out I felt that they were most welcoming. He charges $5 a
night, but no problem there.
Most people find him accomodating if you just ask permission and follow a
few very basic rules which understandably he has to have otherwise all the
dickheads out there would be in there being dickheads lol.
There are a lot of hidden areas around Thornborough and also Kingsborough.
If you stay a night with at Ike's place beside the creek he will offer you
some very very lethal home made wine. Not to be messed with!
Kathy.
