What's the quickest way to get from Townsville to Mt Garnet? Obviously, up
the Bruce highway to south of Innisfail, but from there on, I'm buggered.
Whereis.com is not much help.

Mrs Barnsey and I drove up from the other way a few weeks ago, and did a
goat track just south of the wind farm to south of Milaa Milaa, near the
Misty Mountains, then through to Innisfail.

Any local knowledge appreciated, and will earn a "Dodge a Kagara Zinc Truck
Free" card.

What ever happened to Tony Smith BTW?

I'll be in Cairns for a few weeks soon.

Far as I know, the Milla way is the shortest, but it might be quicker
to go to Atherton, then Herberton, Ravenshoe Mt Garnet time wise. Kathy
is really in a much better posiiton to comment.

There is also a dirt road that goes more or less Atherton to a junction
with the Herberton<>Ravenshoe road, I think it used to be called
"Gentle Annie" by the locals - goes past a series of volcanic lakes.

I didn't recognise you in that disguise.

I suspect it's best to turn off to South Johnstone just south of
I'fail, cross the river and turn right, then drive out to the
intersection with the Palmerston H'way, tune left and end up at Millaa
Millaa.  From there, hmm...

I'm wondering if you followed the old Palmerston H'way on that stint.
Was it bitumen all the way?  Bit windy though.  The other option would
be to go straight through Millaa at the crossroads and continue
"north" to the turnoff to the old "Gentle Annie" on the left, not far
out of town.  While this has been bitumen for the last 50 years or so,
it has recently been upgraded to a better alignment and wider road. :)
[Make sure you stop off at the lookout at the toip to admire the
view.]  This road continues through to the Malanda/Ravenshoe road
which you would turn left on to.

Both drives are very scenic and considering you're going from T'ville
to Mt Garnet I don't think any difference in time at this end would
matter a tinker's curse.

Have a squiz at this:

You could also have a play with the RACQ interactive maps:

Or try that this way <http://tinyurl.com/nzers>

Yeah.  I was wondering the same just before Xmas.

You have my sympathy. :-)

[ Strictly speaking, I think that should read A'ton/R'shoe road. 8-) }

We used to live in Innisfail and I would suggest turning off the Bruce
Highway just north of Innisfail and heading up the Palmerston Highway
through Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe and Innot Hot Springs.

if you have time, make sure you have a swim at both Millaa Millaa Falls and
at Innot Hot Springs. There is a waterfall and nice swim area just west of
Ravenshow too. I think, from memory, it was called Millstream Falls but I
could be wrong.

I hope this helps.
