Hi Barnsey
Sorry I have taken a few weeks to reply - seriously DO NOT change to TPG -
they suck big time. We had a problem with ISP and after making about 20
calls to India they finally fixed the problem.
Hubby Steve says the very quickest way for you to go is through South
Johnstone so you bypass Innisfail then just on our side of Millaa Millaa
turn left into McHugh Road ( which also has a sign on it to the lookout ).
This is what the locals call gentle Annie. This road was done up a couple of
years ago and is just a terrific climb up over the range, the veiw is well
worth the stop at the lookout.  McHugh Road takes you out to the Ravenshoe
road and from there you go via Ravenshoe to Mt Garnet. Some times we take
the back roads through there as Steve does a lot of work up that way and
knows his way around the stick to the main drag - less corners, cows, cow
sh.t etc LOL
Sometime when you are coming through this way give us a call and stop for a
beer on the patio. Thanks for the "get out of getting hit free" pass when I
ride past those blardy big trucks.
Kathy.

Hi Kathy.

Would he mean turn off at Silkwood then through South Johnson and left at
Wangan across to the Palmerston Hwy? or is there another way up to Millaa
Millaa from South Johnson? (Wangan was where we used to live!)

It is a nice drive from Silkwood, but very windy (curves).

We used to drive this back way when our kids had soccer at Silkwood Soccer
ovals. It was the easiest way from Wangan.

Best regards

Garry

Sorry to butt in to the thread but there's no need to go via the cute
Silkwood route, there's a turnoff to South Johnson signposted further
up the Bruce highway. It saves a fair whack of distance compared to
turning past Innisfail but it can be a real bear finding the Henderson
Drive that you have to turn left just up from South Johnson. I've
never seen it well signposted.
this link will show the route

AHHH yes!! Sorry but I forgot all about that turn off from the highway. It
comes out at the South Johnson Post Office.

The left turn into Henderson Drive is just before the Wangan Pub. The 2nd
street before it, and just past the swimming hole that our kids used to swim
in.

That's it. The quiet town that the film "all men are liars" used has
pretty well turned up it's toes now.

But for some reason i make a habit of driving past it and having to
turn back around. D'OH!

Yeah!! If you get to the servo you have gone too far!!

BUT if you DO get to the servo, stop in for one of their pies. EXCELLENT!!
One of the best I have ever had, especially their curry pies. They make them
themselves, or they did when we were living there 8 years ago. One of the
sons was a pastry cook.

Thanks everyone...........but after all this, I'm not going to Mt Garnet
now! My boss has changed his mind.  I'll be doing my mine induction at the
other site, flying in and out.

I'll be working at Chillagoe a fair bit in the future. When I work there,
I'll be driving my GQ there and back (Diesel refunded by the company).

I'll also be doing a fair bit of driving around the Gulf and Tablelands
area. Occasionally, I'll be going to Karumba to the minerals terminal too.
So watch out for a white 100 series Cruiser, (well I hope that's the car
they'll give me, and not a clapped out ute)............oh and watch out for
our road trains too.

On the subject of road trains..........if anyone's driving those goat tracks
around the gulf. make sure you've got a UHF and have it tuned to Chanel 1.
They've put in "call points" on some of the more dangerous parts of the
"Highway" so you know when there's a truck coming the other way. Also,
without a UHF, it's near impossible to overtake them  100 foot long, 90
wheels........don't know what the total weight is, but it's best to give way
to them.

Just for curiosity. What do you do at the mines?

When you go to Chillagoe, make sure you turn left just after Walkamin on
the new road, and just stay on that road until Chettle Road. Turn right into
Chettle Road and that takes you out to the Dimbulah/Mareeba Road, you dont
have to go into Mareeba. (spose you know that?)
If you are cheeky - dont go right down Chettle road, continue on until you
are almost at the Sugar Mill. Just before the Channel crossing at the Mill
there is a channel road on your right that says "keep out, sunwater road
etc". LOL the locals all tear throught there. It cuts off a considerable
distance and saves about 9kms overall.Mind you - you never heard that from
me.
There is some great country out there Barnsey - enjoy it.
Kathy.
