My 3.0D Jackaroo sometimes idles poorly or won't start. The problem can be
overcome by using the primer pump to expel air from the system. Is this a
"known problem" for these engines? If so how is the air getting in and what
is the cure.

That was done about 6 months ago. The problem started a week ago.

Check all the fuel lines from the tank to the fuel pump
there may be a split somewhere and it's sucking air

it could also be the pump it's self sucking in air somewhere

And is the tank standard or modified?

Unchanged since leaving factory.

I've done that as best I can. Unfortunately regular use of the primer pump
has spilt diesel over the rubber hoses that connect to the primer pump, so
it is difficult to tell by inspection if they are leaking.
