Planning a trip sydney-Uluru

I am starting to plan this trip.  due to school/uni/commitments we will
probably be going Dec/Jan, so conditions won't be ideal.
Anyone got any tips on must-sees, best route, places with water (!?)
etc.  We prefer to free camp or stay in NP's when possible, so any info
regarding this would be great.  Is there anywhere to stay near Uluru
besides the main Ayres Rock campground?
thanks

Sorry for the late reply..only just saw this.

Regarding camping at Uluru - there is now only the one spot to camp - and
yes, thats in the main Ayres Rock campground.  I would imagine that in
Dec/Jan it would be quite empty - as it's far too hot to be outside in the
sun in a tent.  At other times of the year you are camped ontop of each
other.

As for your question re: best places with water - do you mean for swimming?
Or drinking?  Or what?  You usually take your own drinking water with you -
not relying on hoping to find some along the way!

I know it's hard when you can only travel in Dec/Jan because of other
commitments - but it could easily be over 45c in some parts - and you'll
need to have a car thats in A1 condition.

If you need any more info or questions, post back with your email address
and I will contact you.

Thanks Bob,

We will carry 60-80L of drinking water with us (us=6). Meant water for
swimming, or at least paddling! And kids are always hopeful of fishing.
We will fill up with drinking water at the towns, and are very
conservative with it anyway when camping.  Car is good...Troopy that is
always faithful, pulling a 4wd trailer that I bought off a guy from this
group a few years ago that suits us perfectly. May take another small
4wd as well (eldest about to get P's. God help us).
Was hoping there might be some hidden treasure in the form of
free/cheap/little-used campsites somewhere near the Rock. Ah well! My
Camp2 freecamp book shows one that is 28km from Uluru, but is only
overnight, and one a bit further (84km), that is  called Curtin Springs
Roadhouse.
So far our trip looks something like this:
Syd-Orange
O-Cobar
C-Broken Hill
BH-Port August
PA-Lake Eyre
LA-Coober Pedy
CP-Uluru
U-Kings Canyon
KC- Alice
Alice-Jervois
J-Boulia
B-B'ville
B'ville-Innaminka
I-Cam's Cnr
CC-Bourke
B-Trangie
T-Syd
Sound reasonable for approx 6 wks?
Are we going the wrong way? missing something amazing?

Would love to pick your brain...my email is valid.

That's the minimum at that time of year.  You can easily drink 5 litres
a day if you're not acclimatised to the heat.  I wouldn't be
comfortable with it myself, I'd add 50% or double it to be sure.

I hate to be a wet-blanket, but I wonder if you appreciate how hot it
gets.  The weather bureau may say 45C, but the road/ground temp can
easily be 55C or more, esp around Birdsville.

Give the Birdsville cop a call.  He very successfully talked me out of
doing exactly what you are planning.   I'd go only in early December or
I'd seriously think about cutting out the Alice-Birdsville-Innaminka
and just go Alice-Innaminka.  It's not just the heat, there's less
traffic at that time of year if you do get stuck.  It only takes one
shower...  It actually happened when I was there one Dec.
