kev, thanks for the info., i`m a very recent convert to toyota, all of
four weeks in fact :^)..... not a planned move but the old girl was cheap,
and is definately more comfortable than the landie (must be getting old) i
should have been clearer in my post....the h motor was installed by the po,
it had the petrol engine previously afaik. it`s registered with the diesel
in it. the motor feels underpowered, with no legs, the old drive it like you
hate it adage comes to mind :^) but in respect to the age of the thing,
ive been taking it easy.....i will check the injectors, and maybe fiddle
with the timing..but maybe its just the way there engines are ?? also, on
first startup of the day, i glow it for 10-15 seconds and it starts on first
turn of the crank, but, for at least a minute, it runs really rough, with
enough (fuel) smoke coming out of it to kill every mozzie for miles
around........but every subsequent start is ok. 5sec., glow and no smoke.
crook glow plug(s) maybe ? gotta fix it or the neighbors will be calling the
epa :^)
cheers john

The fact that subsquent starts are OK points to one or more crook
glowplugs.
But, it could also be a dribbly injector, in which case one day you
might have horrid things happen to it if left unfixed.
Glowplugs of reasonabke quality are available on eBay, with injectors
it is cheaper to buy a reman set from someone who does them properly
and in bulk than it is to pay your local shop to do them. The local guy
may or may not do a good job, but will be double the price.
I personally recommend Noordman diesel in Perth - they have depots
around the country and deliver fast....

the noise it makes creates mental pictures of nasty happenings :^) a
chamber(S) full of raw fuel.....a mate of mine has an injector tester, so
will check `em out......the glowplugs will be checked today

As the others have said sounds like a crook injector
get ya mate to check them
also a set of extractors and 2 1/2 inch exhaust will make a noticable
difference up around highway running speed
also replace the air filter, this will also make a difference if it's
old and blocked, of course the obligitory oil change will be nessasary
especially if it has a dripping injector, that raw diesel will make it's
way into the oil

checked glow plugs, all ok......so injectors next i guess. extractors and
bigger pipe sounds good, i can get a set off a petrol engined vehicle of
same model....maybe with the help of the red spanner and a
hammer.........................:^) air filter is donaldson, mounted on the
guard, and is ok. can only hope any injector problem is repair rather than
replace, can only hope.... thanks for the help kev.

bit of an update, turns out to be *operator error* :^( because it was
originally petrol, there is no edic gear fitted...............talking to the
po on the weekend, and whinging about startup smoke, he said, "are you
heating it after it starts?" revelation time........about 3 seconds glow 5
seconds off................within 30 seconds no smoke, and ready to roll,
bloody cheap fix :^))) plus he gave me a heap of spares for the
motor....looks like bye, bye landy........hehe
