This life is not a rehearsal it is the real thing!

Hello Lushy
We have been up to Cape York a few times over the years.  We live west of Cairns so it is really our stomping ground. The last time we walked it from Weipa to the tip cross country!
Be prepared for bulk people - some folks spend a fortune on GPSs, radios, even the flying doctor radio LOLOLOL... this is no longer the last frontier - people do the trip in their droves! After walking 306kms we were camped near the tip and counted over 100 people driving past us before 9am in the morning - so you are definitely NOT on your own. Most folks seemed to get out of their air con 4WD, race out to the tip, take a photo and head straight back to Cairns!! Bit sad really as there is stilll a lot of places where you can be "remote".

The 4wders seem to be from down "south". They take 2 days to get to Cairns then flat out to Cape York. They seem to travel in convoys - so you just dont get one vehicle you get 2 or 3 or 4 or 5!
The best advice I can give you is that you just accept the fact that you are not doing something extraordinary - even the overland telegraph track is not a remote adventure. Needless to say the Cape is also an absolutely beautiful area with a lot to offer anyone who wants to stop and get out of their vehicle and walk a few kms away from the road. Believe me you wont see a soul and the rewards are great. :)
If you are keen to not join the masses and do something "off the track" email me and I might be able to help you.
Kathy.

Lol, I rode a pushie up it from Cairns in 1988. You're absolutely right
about the convoys of 4WDs.

My younger brother did the trip in a 120Y a few years back. He put it on the
barge back but he made it up and got the photos. He said one of the
highlights was the plane trip back to Cairns because of the brilliant views,
I suppose that is always an option. I do my off roading in a bit more
challenging places where even the highways have 4X4 sections. The main
obstacle here is the Ned Kelly wanna bees.

Did the 120 Y make it into a 4wd magazine? I recall reading about a bloke
......(and his wife?) who drove the Cape in one. Must be 10? years ago?

I don't remember anything about a magazine but his girlfriend at the time, a
nurse did the trip with him.
