Well we went for a drive in the new Toyota Work Mate Cruiser Station wagon
and it just won our hearts. Only problem was that it was priced at approx
$55000 and that waas without Bullbar, towbar, duel tanks etc etc etc. But
the basic design without electric windows, carpet, cloth seats are what we
like in a 4wd. The clearance was terrific, but sheesh for $55K it would want
to be would it????
The next vehicle we drove was a new Nissan Patrol, 3lt TD common Rail diesal
station wagon ST. OMG what a lot of extras for your $$. It has cloth trim,
adjustable lumbar support, elelctric windows, 7 seats etc etc etc and bull
bar , towbar and spottys thrown in for $55K. The clearance looked pretty
good and we thought it was by far the better 4wd for value.
Now we needed to know if our 99 Hilux 3lt TD 4wd was worse than these
vehicles so we went for a wild weekend with a freind who has just forked out
over $50K for a new Hilux - in fact it was so new that at the start of the
trip he had only done 300kms. He was very very very upset with the poor
clearance of his new Hilux - it scraped its way through every gully and up
and down every hill we traversed.
The outcome - we are keeping out trusty Hilux, why would we spend $50k plus
on a vehicle that offered us way less than what we own now?
4wd vehicles are becoming very "soft" arent they? It is ok if you just want
to go to the local tip in them - but seriously would you take them bush?
Thank goodness we had a look - we are now more than content with what we
have - it just has not failed us.

The difference between the Patrol and the cruiser is the engine
3.0L turbo 4cyl vs 4.5L turbo V8
load up the either with 1/2 tonne of gear and hook on the 1.5 tonne
camper with boat etc for a 3 month trip

the Landcruiser also has a "hose out" interior, it's very agricultural
and is aimed at that sort of customer

the Nissan is for the once in a while offroaders who use it for a daily
driver

Are you stuck in the 90's? Thats what things cost now.. go price a top
of the range model if you want to be scared.

Why are you comparing your mates new lux with a breadbox or grenade
then saying they are less than what you have now?

I wasnt aware that I was reallyputting down the new Hilux, but I do think
that they have moved away from a real off road vehicle to a much softer one,
hence my comment that we wont spend our $$ on something that gives us less
in the bush.
I probably am stuck in the 90s, when you paid for a 4wd and got one that
took you where you wanted to go :P
Thanks for the comments Biggus, all constructive :)

Does your 99 Hilux still have a solid front axle?
Most likely it does and they are better off road, later Lux's like my
2003 have IFS, whilst not being as good off road they are very
significantly better on road, their ride and handling is vastly better.
IMO the IRS models are suited to most owners needs but Toyota should
have made solid front axles optional for the those who want to use a
Hilux for more extreme off roading.

No it has the independant front Suspension which with our first corrugated
road trip we cursed. Came home and had to do something to it through ARB or
one of them.
Our original Hilux has the solid axle and truly went anywhere. Seems that
you pay more and get less huh? Our freinds who have just got the new Hilux
said the same as you - you should be able to opt for an "offroad" vehicle or
a soft 4wd. They have been to some great spots in the past with their duel
cabs, but this one just wont take them.

You werent, re-read what you were saying...

of course they have, look at the major buyers of 4b's - shopping
mums... they dont want coils and live axle. they want plush speedbump
absorbing road handling soft flap sh.t.
just us - 29 May 2007 08:54 GMT
Thank goodness you dont put me in that category! Please try not to put all
mums in that same basket - even when I was a stay at home "Mum" I would take
the kids 4wding. Depends on how you were brought up I guess :)

That is true. But they have cruisers, Mercs and BMW's and Cayenne's etc
........... not Hiluxes.

We all get the sh.ts at rich shopperholic mums in fourbies,  but at least
use the "soccer mum put-down reply" where it is justified.

She didn't. She compared the new 'lux, the new 'cruiser and the new Patrol
to an OLD Hilux and said the old 'lux was better than all three new ones as
they are all soft.

Read a write up for the 2006 Jeep Wrangler and the guy stated that the
vehicle did everthing as far as a 4x4 but he ended with stating it was
"Primative" with cheap plastic interior, well thats what I like about mine -
able wash the bastard out when the mud/dust needs cleaning out.

Same here Lushy - after some trips we have been known to really probably
"overwet" the vinyl inside, but nothing a day in the sun with all the doors
open wont fix.

This is right - and take the very cheap thin carpet out, undo the rubber
grommets and flush the whole inside out - hang up the mats and wash them
with the hose - try that with a flashy lined and leather seated cruiser
mmmmmmmmmmm, stinky poos.
Now been told I can get the Unlimited in 12 months whhoooo hoooooooo.
