QLD EPA has now removed the need for a permit to access the state
forestry areas for private recreational use, 4WDing, Motorbike riding,
Horse riding, hiking etc.
these permits were free anyway but still a pain at times to renew
commecial use of forestry areas will still need a permit

I was talking to a ranger the other day and boy oh boy he was very narrow
minded regarding the opening of the forests. He thinks we are all idiots who
are going to rip tear bust his roads and then who will keep up the
maintenance? Behind Copperlode Dam west of Cairns there is a closed road
that only 2 tour operators have the key for and for many years even the road
that was not under lock and key was "permit only" I was horrified to "sneak"
in there one day and find this incredible board walk that MY taxes and yours
had paid for and the only ppl who were able to see it was those on the
commercial tour. That totally sux as my kids would say. Now that it is open
to that point I tell everyone to go take a look at what your taxes had paid
for so that rich tourists could see it - stirring. I am ALL for open
forestry roads  - it is our rights I believe to be able to get about where
and when we want to. Up here there were tracks that had the State Forest
sign on them so even locals never knew that you could actually drive them
but you did need a permit (permit available from the office Mon to Fri). I
have known a few ppl who actually got caught driving in there and copped the
fine. One poor unfortunate just parked his car inside the fenceline and
walked - he got fined which was a bit steep as to park it outside the fence
it was in clear veiw of the main road.
These roads make great cycling too which is fun

I haven't gone right through myself, but back in 1974-76 a few of my
colleagues did fairly regularly.  They were based up here on the
Tableland but had duties in Cairns too, so they often went down that
way as a "short cut".  (I don't know that it saved *time* though. :)

We used to go up the Mt Lewis road fairly regularly back in the late
60s, early 70s.  AFAICR there was a sign at the bottom, not far off
the "highway", but we always regarded it as a bluff and didn't take it
seriously.  It was a good road then too, better than the Julatten
Range at that time!  No problem at all for the EH S/W. :-)

We used to drive the H road in the 70s too Phred - but then along came Wet
Tropics and closed it. Before the cyclone you could still get along it ok
but they wouldnt give you a permit. Since the cyclone they have just let it
completely go - apparently that is progress huh?

Wrong group, but Kathy might be interested.

Last year for a bit of fun we rode down Black Mountain Rd at Kuranda
and then down Quaid's road to the coast.

On the way we met some fit young people whose idea of a fun Sunday was
to be dropped at the bottom of Quaid's road, ride up to Black Mountain
road, then through Kuranda to the Copperlode Creek road and then down
the Lake Morris road to home.

They reckoned it took about 6 hours.

I'd love to be that fit.
