80 series Cruiser- Rear axle removal.-  Need advice.

I've been doing the brakes on my '94 Landcruiser, no problem with that, but
I've noticed a slight oil leak from the right rear axle when I pulled off
the brake disk to check the handbrake and adjust. So I suspect an axle oil
seal needs replacing.
I have one of those rather useless Gregory's repair manuals and all it says
about removing the rear axle is :-

1. Remove the axle shaft to rear hub nuts and spring washers.
   [OK done, removed six 12mm nuts and spring washers, bit tight with rust
but they came off OK with WD40.]

2. Using a hammer and brass punch on the studs remove the cone washers from
the axle shaft flange.
   {Here I'm stuck. I've tried tapping the studs with a brass drift, but
nothing happens. I can see the "cone washers" but how hard do I have to belt
the studs to get them out? I'm afraid to bash the studs too hard for fear of
damaging them. I've applied some WD40 and let it stand overnight.}

3. Install 2 x M8x25mm bolts to the threaded holes in the axle shaft flange
and tighten evenly until the flange is dislodged from the rear hub.

   [OK no problem, I can do that, but it seems you have to get the cone
washers out first as per step 2]

There are no comprehensive illustrations in the Gregory's manual to help.

Can anyone please advise on how to go about step 2 to get the cone washers
out, just tapping the studs even fairly hard with the brass drift dies not
seem to do the trick.

Ah! cone washers, don't you just love them.

Here is the big secret.

Keep tapping, firmly - not gently but by the same rule you don't want
to distort the studs - each one in turn.

Round and round and around you go and it will look like exactly ZIP is
happening.....

Then, just when you have decided that i am having a laugh at your
expense, and just before you give up in disgust, one little conical
washer will come loose, followed soon after by another, and then all of
the little bastards will give in.

Patience, don't damage anything, and persistence is the BIG tip.

Afterwards you will wonder "Why Toyota? Why?"

Thanks Blue Heeler, I followed your suggestions and it worked, exactly as
you said. You even got the timing right!!!

I also injected some penetrating oil into the cut in the side of the cone
washers with a hypodermic needle and I think that helps too.

Even did the other axle too, just to loosen it up in case I need to get it
out anytime. It hadn't been taken out before in 14 years. There was a little
superficial rust on the studs, so I took them out with two locked nuts and
cleaned them up with emery paper then put them back with some grease on the
threads, same for the cone washers, should be easier next time.

The instructions in those Gregory's car manuals are woefully inadequate on a
lot of subjects, unless you already know exactly how to do every operation.
They lack details that people who most need a manual, like me who only does
such a job once or twice in a lifetime, really need. Just saying do this or
remove that can sometimes leave one wondering, HOW??. I've been doing minor
maintenance on my cars for forty years, not enough to learn all the tricks,
as you just get used to one vehicle and it gets too old to keep bothering
with then you get a new set of problems with a new vehicle.

 try backing off the nuts 5 mil or so. then, using a reasonably heavy
club hammer, belt the axle HARD in the middle.....the cones should all
pop out......this is the method used on heavy vehicles...100% success rate.

Thanks mate, lucky I checked back to this thread, I had not been able to
find that before, much better than the Gregory's.
