I know that one... me electrician..

High Intensity Discharge...
Like fluoros, but much more like street lighting.
A coil is charged up with current.  A starter opens the circuit.  Being
a induction, sudden stop of current causes high voltage to develop.
Enough to leap across a Xenon, Soduim, or whatever tube.

If you don't understand that, just know that you get much more light per
watt than Halogen.

Cheers

So how much is a full conversion cost though
including everything, bulbs, Ballasts etc.
for a set of IPF 900

35 watt kits: Anywhere between $30.00 (el-cheapo ebay Chinese crap)
through to $1500.00 (real Philips, Borsch, Hella etc)
55 watt kits: Anywhere between around $150.00 through to $2000+

Im gonna have a bunch of 55w 5000k kits shortly for around the $250.00
range. Possibly ready by the week after next.
55w HID is supposedly around 450% brighter than that of a standard 55w
halogen equivalent. So really is probably only double that of your 130
watt H3 bulbs in your IPF 900's.  At least you've got some decent
lights. IPF 800 (squares) are crap compared to the IPF900 (round). I
have both. I have a 35w kit in both. I can compare apples to apples,
and the 800's are really a really poor performing light when compared
to the equivant round IPF900's.  The 800's are really crap when
compared to, say, an XGT with a 55w kit in them.
Have the 900's on my subaru brumby, and it being a twin headlight,
have a H1 kit in their standard high beam headlight housings. Gives a
bloody lot of light without having to go silly and putting a massive
amount of spotties on. Would easily outdo any B&S goat router ute with
their 6 spotties on their rooves / buulbar.

Check out my crazy 7-bulbed 295 watt Blitz light.
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlbAk9MEFno
pics:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ulFz7teBnc
Pathetic light output...  and it then melted.

And bring out the old Hella , Trilite, Narva bull light. Yes they are
a crap light with their original 100 and 130 watt halogen bulb - be it
a H1 or a H3 bulb.
Throw in a kit - the best thing is that the ballast can be held inside
the housing. Not many lights can do this. Makes for a _very_ nice and
tidy install.
And the kit makes them come alive.
55w kit in a pair of Narva lights:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IetVnhKx-Ww
Video'd a fortnight ago.

...as ya can tell, I love playing with this stuff. Not just flogging
it to try to make a quick buck.
My next attempt is to go back to halogen, but Im talking about 1500
watts of 240v lighting here.

cheers

Is there a HB4 bulb available
as in the 100 series Landcruiser
or H7 as in the BA Falcon

Kev

> Is there a HB4 bulb available

yes, majority of bulb types are available, including the HB4 in the
100 series and H4/H1 combo in the twin headlight housing 80 series.
Patrol GQ and GU use the standard bi-xenon hi/lo single H4 bulb. The
not-so-common halogen bulb types, such as that of the H2 bulb (as used
in Hella 1000's and Cibie Oscar 'super slim' spotlights for example)
and the Osram JCD bi-pin (as used in all Lightforce spotlights) are
not available in a HID bulb. Or at least I have yet to find a
manufacturer who makes them... Or is willing to make them.

As far as I recall the 80 and 100 cruisers use switch-to-ground in
their headlight circuitry, (same as old EA81 subaru wagons and
Brumby's), which is the reverse to that of most other common vehicles
on our roads. Although saying that Hyundai Excel's use some weird
reverse polarity between lo and hi beam. (if anyone is bored one day,
go look at one). If you grab a normal kit for your 100 series, you'll
need to either drive another relay from your existing lighting
circuitry to drive the ballasts, or use a diode and cut'n'reverse the
polarity of the wiring. A lot of kits that I have seen (even el-cheapo
chinese rubbish) have details or at least mention this. Apparently 100
series cruisers also have some sort of loading sense on the hibeam
circuit, thus a normal kit will ignite the hi-beam dash indicator when
in fact lo-beam is on. A resistor of some value is also required.
There are kits available specifically for the 100 series which I'd be
inclined to grab for ease of installation.
Some dude on ebay is selling cheap 55w HID kits specifically for the
100 series. Another dude in Melbourne is selling 100 watt HID kits for
the cruiser. Expensive, but the 100 watt metal halide HID's would be a
gazzilion times brighter than that of the standard factory halogens.

More info:
ADR 77 and ADR 78 is around 130 pages of utter crap of what is and
what is not legal of HID on Australian roads.
You need washers on automatic tilting / adjusting headlight housings
which need to be connected to a sensor between the rear of the chassis
and diff. HID bulbs can not be longer than a certain amount, can only
produce a certain amount of lumens within a certain range, must be a
max of 35 watts, can not be any more than 4300k in colour, must be in
a proper E marked housing. Must be Euro light pattern, US and Japan
spread patterns are illegal.  It goes on and on... It gave somebody
somewhere a job for a quite while. Doesn't mention a thing about using
HID bulbs within spot lights or 'auxially lighting systems'.

Early cheap HID kits didnt have much in the way of UV protection on
the bulb. Which metal halides produce a lot of. UV can deteriorate the
headlight housing chrome reflector within a year or three. Bulbs in
newer kits that meet whatever ISO standards must not trasmit more than
umpteen % of UV. No idea what this is though.

I could go on and on but wont. I haven't written this much in the past
week on aus.cars.offroad since about 2003...

I'm just tossing up weather I should first convert my cruiser to the
2006 model clear lens lights(side by side instead of vertical stacked)
then add some HID kits to the high beam, the 4300K lights would probably
be the highest I'd use, I have tried higher temp lights and they were a
real pain to see on tree lined country roads and even worse in the rain

That switch to ground is common on most Jap cars, and I think on all
Toyota models

hmmmm. a couple of 100W HID in clear lens high beams plus a couple of
100W HID converted IPF900s
nice

Thanks for that info

Heres a 6 min video of a 35w 6000k kit in both in the hi-beam
headlight housings and IPF900 spotties on my Subey Brumby.
Done 9:30pm saturday night. Only the first 2 mins is relavent, the
rest is rubbish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeRhQAFFdkc

So a 100w 5000k kit would be rather extreme.

I had some blue lights once
and driving country roads at night or in the rain was a real chore
as you couldn't really see anything other than the white lines and posts
kangaroos were almost hidden in the light

> So a 100w 5000k kit would be rather extreme.

5000K would be better for bush/rain driving than the 6000K

I have been told that 4300K is the best for wet weather driving away
from the city lights
hmm
100 watt HID in the clear lens headlights and 100 watt in the IPFs
extreme??
Nahhhh
