No real reason why you couldn't use the winch extension strap.
I bet that when you get bogged/stuck though you will need the winch
extension AND a tree protector ;-)
The tree protector is better suited being shorter and wider than an
extension strap.
Whatever you do though dont use a snatch strap in place of the
extension/protector, but I suspect you would already know that. :-)

That goes without saying :)

Thanks, I did - good way to make a catapult :) but you
have given me an idea; How about wrapping the snatch
strap around the tree many times until the two ends are
only a foot or so long and then hooking the winch up
to that - I _think_ the pulling energy would then be
dispersed in the first turn or so of the strap and, thus,
there would be very little elasticity - comments anyone?

That's what I do!

It's always best to have all the equipment you may need, but when you don't,
you have to work with what you've got.
I was once in a situation requiring some winching with only the winch and
snatch strap available. I did exactly what you suggest: wrapped most of the
length of the snatch strap around a tree to minimize the springing and
hooked the winch to it. This worked well enough.
