Minister to probe four-wheel-drive safety
" Federal Roads Minister Senator Ian Campbell says he will meet with
manufacturers and importers to discuss the best way to educate
motorists about driving four-wheel-drive vehicles.
All four-wheel-drive vehicles sold in Australia are tested to ensure
they meet safety standards but there are concerns that rollover
testing is not conclusive.
Senator Campbell says the industry must ensure consumers get detailed
safety information when they buy a vehicle.
"Here's the challenge, what do we do to better advise people about the
characteristics of some of these vehicles that do require more care,"
he said.
"I mean clearly there are things that you can do when your driving a
four-wheel, things you should do when you're driving a
four-wheel-drive that you may not have to do in a passenger car."
The Federal Government will also talk to the states and territories
about the possibility of introducing a special licence for motorists
who drive large four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Senator Ian Campbell says driving some four-wheel-drive vehicles is
more difficult than driving a sedan.
"Some of the big four-wheel-drives they are more akin to driving a
small truck than they are to driving a passenger car, so they're the
sort of options you could look at," he said.
"But I think driver education and consumer information at the point of
sale are things we can work on immediately with the cooperation of the
states."

If it was just another "class" on the licence, then probably not a lot, but
I can't see them doing it as sensibly as that, they'd be sure to make it
expensive.
More to the point though, how many friggin morons do you see driving normal
cars - and killing themselves and others in the process - despite having a
licence for that type of car? Flamin heaps of them!
I can't see, having to sit a special licence to drive a 4WD, would be any
more successful in changing the behaviour of the small minority of dumb 4WD
owners, than having to sit a car licence has changed the behaviour of a
large minority of dumb car owners.

Does this also mean that the people with caravans will also have to have a
special category of licence?
Muddy
Biggus - 02 Feb 2004 12:52 GMT
Now thats an idea!
>Does this also mean that the people with caravans will also have to have a

kevcat - 03 Feb 2004 02:19 GMT
That why it won't happen
you can drive a 2.5 tonne truck with a gross mass of 4.5 tonnes without
a special licence, as all 4WD passenger vehicles has a gross mass of
less than that it won't happen
the idea that you need to do things in a 4WD that you don't driving a
normal sedan is not valid, when towing a trailer you need to do things
that you don't normally do in just a sedan
it's just this w.nker trying to grab a few votes because there will be
an election soon
problem is there are more 4WD owners than anti-4WDers
come election time, and the threat of making people pay for a special
licence will kill off any thing like that

So they would need to do the same for small vans and
People Movers etc. I doubt it.

It's coming up to f.cking election time.
What do you expect? Yet another half arsed scheme to suck in
fringe voters like Harold the fuckwit Scruby and his ilk -
"Look at us, we're doing something about those dangerous 4WD's
that kill all these innocent walking pedestrian types".
It'll come to nothing, like so many other of these brilliant
ideas that surface at election time.

Very odd since you can drive any vehicle up to 4.5 tonne GVM on a car
license which included lots of small trucks.
Are they going to introduce special licenses for drivers of small trucks
under 4.5t gvm?
Instead of targetting drivers of particular vehicles like 4WD's we need
to improve overall driving standards which are currently appalling.
Is this a knee jerk reaction to the deaths of the Canberra lawyers on
the Hume Hwy recently when their Landcruiser rolled?

you give too much credit for a politician - any reaction to anything other
than their super benefits or a "megia" soundbite fails to register on their
tiny minds.

Yep. There's a few lefties using this tragic accident as a lever

It sure sounded like that was the case.
Typical crap that happens a lot these days, shift blame and avoid taking
responsiblity for their actions, ie driver error so blame the vehicle
instead of the driver.

You blokes aren't cynical enough... Wanna buy a bridge? :-)
This is just an idea for another source of revenue. With every second
car now being a 4x4 (around here anyway) a "special licence" at, say,
$100 for 5 years, would pay for a few decent ministerial junkets and
other high priority items.

of reducing the working mans way of life, making sure he has to count every

Yeah. I was only considering the photo ID plastic, not the "extras".

Costs less than that for a Heavy Combination license and about that for
multi (B double) combination.
Daryl
Biggus - 06 Feb 2004 11:47 GMT
Yup, but this is different, 4wds are good vote gainers, the harder
they "APPEAR" to make it the more votes from the average fuckwit.

the "yes ministry" of CLOWNS reigns supreme. The next thing that they will
think of is that because children commit crimes the parents should have a
licence to spawn children. This govt is so full of BS and lame brained ideas
or lack of they trot out this kind of drivel just to create discussion so
that they can claim they are actually doing something rather than screwing
the country.

I think that suggestion does actually have some merit. There was a
clever line in a movie that was something like "You need a license
to own a dog, but they'll let any asswipe have children".
Jim - 02 Feb 2004 23:38 GMT
Unfortunately you can't learn intelligence and common sense in a license
prep class. At least new 4wds usually come with a set of instructions. Kids
don't.
When you stuff a 4wd you know straight away that somethings wrong. It may
take years to discover that you've done the same to your kids lives. And
that's a few elections away.
