there was discussion here a year ago about insurance.
Im considering changing insurers at renewal time and wonder if anyone has
info on alternative insurers to the big  4 (aami/alianz/gio/nrma etc etc).

thanks

I nearly switched from RACV (the NRMA equivalent in VIC since the merger)
but found that AAMI adopted a lower market value for the same model and
vintage vehicle.  In the end, the minor increase in premium justified (in my
mind) the increase in designated market value.

Good luck shopping around as many trading brands are underwritten by the
same company(ies), further reducing the actual number of choices available
to prospective customers.

TCIS peeved me off in January. Had been with them for the prior six
years. No complaints - thought that they were tops. Until a letter
saying "Sorry, your vehicle is classed as an unique or rare vehicle, and
we no longer can cover your vehicle".

Ex-ARB (Australian 4wd Insurance), wanted 1200 something dollars. I said
no thanks.

Insurance Advisernet (brisbane) cover for complete "offroad" (unmarked
road or track on any map) and came in at $90.00 cheaper than TCIS last
year. Complete coverage for theft, fire, roll over. Appears to be
everything except for the usual competition.

Would never go with NRMA, AAMI etc. They don't except the word
"modified", or anything over a 2" lift.

Only 'but' with Insurance Advisernet is that they require the vehicle to
have a kill switch and a black wire alarm system. Not a real biggy if
you like your vehicle...

No affiliation. Flippin good service.

thanks Dave + Steve,

I had the impression from reading articles on this NG that there were
companies that specialised in 4WD coverage only

I currently have a ZA/03 Escape thats due for insurance renewal in march and
the premium just went up by $490 to $1700 even though there were no claims
made....naturally my reaction was one of....WTF??

tempting to just revert to 3rd party only , but the sydney suburbs of
brighton and ramsgate are a mecca for - broooooom...ptish and doof doof doof
, so its only a matter of time before one's luck runs out and one gets hit
by a pursued wrx or skyline etc etc.

definately calling insurance advisenet on friday.

Dash.

Being an unmodified 'normal' 4wd, you may have even better luck trying
TCIS and DGA Insurance. I was annoyed at them since I would have
preferred to have stuck with them - since they are affiliated with the
National Four Wheel drive council and the NSW and ACT four wheel drive
clubs.

Try joining a 4wd club, and mention this to whichever insurance mob.
Some prefer the owner being in a nationally recognised and affiliated
4wd club.

DGA:  http://www.dgainsurance.com.au    (ex ARB insurance)

I have just got quotes for my new 2000 TD landcruiser RACV $1187 GIO $970
AAMI $550
I have been with them for eight years, one claim not a problem they even up
the value on the wife's car from the $26000 we paid to $31000. If you are
after 4X4 insurance check this months Australia 4X4 mag somewhere near the
back there is an ad.
