Looking at a possible 4WD as a next vehicle but horrified at the fuel
economy on the large wagons ie Landcruiser and Patrol - around town
rates of around 20 litres per 100km is scary!

Was reviewing the Nissan web site and noticed they offer a 3.0 turbo
diesel Patrol Wagon for under $50K and apparently the NRMA gave it first
place in a review on fuel economy - it even beat many mid-size 4WD's
like Pajero etc.

However, power and torque is about half compared to the 4.5 litre models
though.  Anyone care to comment on the pros and cons of this smaller
engine in a large wagon?  I guess I don't really understand the
difference between power and torque either so if anyone could explain
how each is important would be appreciated.

Finally, it is most likely that I would get an auto so anything to keep
in mind if getting an auto?

I'm not planning on extreme 4WDing, just want to go places where a
standard car can't.

It will have ample for the places I'll be taking you Ty.
And from my lengthy researching, turbo diesel is about the only way you'll
get close to reasonable fuel economy on a family sized 4WD.

hehe then maybe you'd better not follow me to the places I'll be taking you
;)

Well, It takes fuel to do work, and lugging around a full-size 4WD wagon is
a lot of work!. If you are worried about fuel economy perhaps a Suzuki or
Daihatsu would be a better proposition. It's a trade-off..

I used to have an LJ50 that ran on a whiff of an oily rag :) Moved up to a
trayback Hilux now as I value the ability to go faster than 80km/h and carry
more than a shoebox full of stuff more than fuel economy.

Let us know when you get your fourby, perhaps a Canberra A.C.O expedition is
on the cards :)

cheers.

Early ones blow holes in pistons, Blow Turbos, gearboxes, clutches,
Idler pulleys are $3000, Air flow sensors are $1300, I could keep
going.

And comparing a LARGER Petrol and a Diesel is kinda f.cked up, 3.0 Pet
V 3.0 Die maybe...

I have just been test driving the big ex.'s Patrol's 3 & 4.2 TD and the 4.2
TD landcruiser I got the Toyota feel, comfort, ride, handling, power, sh.ts
all over both patrols. OK I got a 2000 model landcruiser against a new
patrol, for the almost same money ($10000 less), but all the items noted
before I just couldn't look past the Toyota.

You got a second hand car for the same price as a new one?
