Anyone know the current conditions, or a good place to find out?  I'm
planning on heading off from Brisbane in a week for my first desert trip,
but the floods have me a bit worried.  I was planning on heading round the
Birdsville track through to Coober Pedy and then up to Uluru.

Anyone have any current info, or any tips/suggestions for someone doing
their first trip in the desert?

Regards,
Ryan

Try the RACQ site road reports. Also the 737 site has links to the Govt
track reports.
Cheers

You might be lucky in that it's probably towards the end of the rainy
season (rain? remember that?).  My memories of growing up in Mt Isa
included the fact that any decent downpour often blocks roads left,
right and centre with not much advance warning at all and most river
crossings have low, if any, bridges which usually flood.  So just be
prepared to change routes or settle down in one location at times if
routes are closed.  If it has been raining, you'd have to check on a
daily basis how the roads are.  The local/regional police stations were
the places we often contacted before heading out on long journeys -
sometimes the cut in the road might be a few hours into your drive
making it a pain to backtrack.
