I have a 94 model 75 series l/cruiser troopy with a 4.2 l diesel which has
done 115,000k.
I have recently started towing an 18 ft caravan and the troopy is a bit slow
on the hills. It has been suggested to me that I should fit a turbo to
increase torque etc. Considering the age of the vehicle etc, I am not sure
wether or not it would be a good idea . I have had quotes of around $3000.
Any body out there had experience fitting a turbo to a similar vehicle? How
is the fuel economy? does the cars cooling system handle the extra power?
any problems with reliability ?
Any comments appreciated.

115.000 klms is just run in for a diesel.
I fitted a turbo to mine at 260,000.... still going strong.

I put a Garret turbo on last year with 180k on the clock and it goes like
the clappers. I feel much safer when overtaking roadtrains, especially fully
loaded during holidays, and driving on the beach.
Price was around 3,500$ fitted, including turbo timer and new exhaust.
Heat stress is as bad as you drive it. Going full throttle uphill in 40
degrees for 15 minutes and you will see your temp. gauge going up.
The extra heat is no problem if you drive it within the maximum power range,
e.g. as long as you have some acceleration left. You have to be carefull as
you are tempted to drive it much faster than non-turbo.
I have not had any problems after 30k and the engine runs very smooth.

Where did you get a Garrett turbo fitted for that kind of money? The best I
can find is more like $4500 PLUS the exhaust system and timer.

Thanks Peter..
Seems like the 1HZ engine can handle it ok. I have heard only positive
responses to the question to date.
